Thanks; I'll have to check that out. I'm not even sure the Von Karajan version is on CD; I had heard it from an LP (Deutsche Grammaphon) back in the early 80's. If I recall, it was a simultaneous recording of the BPO in Berlin, and the organist in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in France; pretty high tech for that time.
It's on CD. I found the slow movement a little sluggish and the organ sound a little harsh in the loudest passages. Munch has the best music making, but technically the sound is not quite up to modern capabilities, and that bad organ edit in the second movement is very annoying. Levine is probably the best bet all around, both musically and technically. Two other good ones are Dutoit, and Barenboim's (where they laminated on the organ at Chartres). However, to some degree all of this is a matter of opinion.
