Microbiologists argue over whether viruses are alive all the time. Certainly they are lacking many things "life" has, cells, enzymes, DNA and RNA together, energy production, ability to self replicate, etc. Even their origins are tricky. Are they degenerate or are they a pre-cellular form? Maybe yes and maybe no and maybe both. We usually compromise and call them "a biological entity". When you catch one, you will say they are alive.
