dictionaries ad nauseum | November 17, 2005 | secret garden

Posted on 11/17/2005 6:54:31 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

acumen \uh-KYOO-muhn; AK-yuh-muhn\, noun
Quickness of perception or discernment; shrewdness shown by keen insight.

Example sentence:
With Leo's rare combination of editorial acumen and business know-how, he might have become a publishing giant had he not permitted his drinking and gambling to hold him back.
--Ellis Amburn, Subterranean Kerouac: The Hidden Life of Jack Kerouac

The family store gave him a sharp business acumen -- acquired, he would say, by manning the cash register -- that few of his rivals possessed.
--David Schiff, "Who Was That Masked Composer?" [2]The Atlantic, January 2000

Etymology: Acumen comes from Latin acumen, "the sharp point of something; sharpness of understanding; cunning," from acuere, "to sharpen."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I'm done for the day - I have no intentions of venturing out on the roads again today.........I wouldn't have even done that trip, except the school nurse and a fever of 102 basically gave me no choice :(

Was it one of those ear thermometers? They are notorious for false high readings.

I tried it 3 times, and it never got it right. It looks to me that it has a 1 in 9 chance of being right.

I don't know what kind of thermometer the nurse used, but I got an almost identical reading when I took it when I got her home.

I've got a call in to the Doctor' office. This child rarely gets this sick and this is now the second thursday in a row this has happened.

It has been right for us every single time. Are you sure your subtraction is right? I'm not being a wise guy. I did subtract incorrectly one time and yelled A-HA! and then double checked afterwards.

Ugh.

Argh.

Well, with Woodward (he who is famous for spending YEARS exposing Water-under-the-Gate-fame) having to be DRAGGED to the front of the federal prosecutor to admit under oath something that he had freely spent months telling other journalists - but what he REFUSED to volunteer to the autocrats to clear Libby's name, is it no wonder there is no accuratemen in front of the cameras in Washington.

i think so, can't be sure, but the very first time i did it it was incorrect and maybe i wasn't FOCUSING properly. i tried to backtrack to find a math error and still didn't get that particular symbol.

Let her rest. Push fluids. Give ibuprofen every 6 hours while the temp is over 101.5 and go light on food today - toast, cereal, applesauce, some soup. There, now you don't need to call the office. Most viruses last 2-3 days and she doesn't need to see a doc unless the fever lasts longer. That's when it may be a bacterial infection.

Take any two didgit number and subtract the sum. The answer is always divisible by 9. The answer can only be 9,18,27,36,45,54,63,72, or 81
