dictionaries ad nauseum | November 17, 2005 | secret garden

Posted on 11/17/2005 6:54:31 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

acumen \uh-KYOO-muhn; AK-yuh-muhn\, noun
Quickness of perception or discernment; shrewdness shown by keen insight.

Example sentence:
With Leo's rare combination of editorial acumen and business know-how, he might have become a publishing giant had he not permitted his drinking and gambling to hold him back.
--Ellis Amburn, Subterranean Kerouac: The Hidden Life of Jack Kerouac

The family store gave him a sharp business acumen -- acquired, he would say, by manning the cash register -- that few of his rivals possessed.
--David Schiff, "Who Was That Masked Composer?" [2]The Atlantic, January 2000

Etymology: Acumen comes from Latin acumen, "the sharp point of something; sharpness of understanding; cunning," from acuere, "to sharpen."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I like that we are finally getting back to basics. The Vice President is traditionally the attack dog of the adminstration.

Hopefully the new tone and being "above the fray" is over.

And that, my friend, is why we will always be Cheneymaniacs. The man has grit.

Did you see this on Luci's page?
" I’m sorry that we couldn’t be joined by Senators Harry Reid, John Kerry, or Jay Rockefeller. They were unable to attend due to a prior lack of commitment. " -Dick Cheney's Speech to Frontiers of Freedom

The classroom is open. And it's a bright sunny morning, the tree guys are here. My ugly, shrub stumps are going to be ground out today. They get here and the truck dies out front. What is it with these dang stumps....always some delay. rme

Ahem on to homework: The Florida girl is found alive and her abductor showed his keen acumen and committed suicide. Kidnapped girl turned celebration thread.

The UN, acme of world cooperation, has a credibility problem. The acumen of Kofi Annan, to say nothing about his integrity, is seriously in doubt. When the UN came into being after WW II, it was the "last great hope for humanity." Now, it has become nothing more than fodder for late night comedians--we can choose whether Leno or Letterman can emulate Kofi's voice and attitude better.

I'm not. It's just the lingering ill effects of watching too much TV in the '70s.

Good driving acumen is a necessity of life in these here parts, especially at this time of the year. In the 10 mile round trip to school and back, not 1 but a total of 6 deer decided to play chicken with me and my vehicle.

Where's the beer vat when I need it :)

His acumen was seriously undone by the corrupt financial dealings of his son. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. A+!
