In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
acumen \uh-KYOO-muhn; AK-yuh-muhn\, noun
Quickness of perception or discernment; shrewdness shown by keen insight.
Example sentence:
With Leo's rare combination of editorial acumen and business know-how, he might have become a publishing giant had he not permitted his drinking and gambling to hold him back.
--Ellis Amburn, Subterranean Kerouac: The Hidden Life of Jack Kerouac
The family store gave him a sharp business acumen -- acquired, he would say, by manning the cash register -- that few of his rivals possessed.
--David Schiff, "Who Was That Masked Composer?" [2]The Atlantic, January 2000
Etymology: Acumen comes from Latin acumen, "the sharp point of something; sharpness of understanding; cunning," from acuere, "to sharpen."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
reason #99, those pansies play in a DOMED STADIUM.
I'm pleased to have been of service.
Oops. You caught me skimming a post. Or maybe I was trying to "negotiate" you down.
i am agog that you have not heard of GOODNIGHT MOON! that is like THE childhood staple of my kids!
Football is still better. Ru-dy! Ru-dy! Ru-dy!
Maybe you should put the 20 bucks towards an ad for the Preds to lose those vomit coloured jerseys.
And when else would they get the chance to nail the little effeminate dude in green tights with an ice ball? A priceless opportunity, worth smuggling snow into a domed stadium.
have you ever seen the tv commercial for ND where the girl is lighting candles in church and then gets the acceptance letter from ND? xshub and i screamed aloud in disgust the first time we ever saw that. i have hated ND since 1974. with a passion.
xshub finally coughs up detes. 9:30 on ESPN.
No, because we refuse to watch their games. They show all of their football games here instead of Aggie games. The head honchos on our stations must be from ND.
Sorry.
Doesn't ring any bells at all.
i feel like i have to send a copy to Jax for Christmas, even though it is a book for a younger child, since you have clearly DEPRIVED HER!! ; )
there were a bunch of us from my HS who went to Pitt. one of our number went to ND, she was in the marching band. they came to Pitt for the Pitt-ND game freshman year. The ND band was full of THE MOST OBNOXIOUS PEOPLE ON THE PLANET. we beat them that year (we had tony dorsett-- at the time, still pronounced DOR-sett) we were thrilled.
I was just going to post that to Grimmy.
It is odd that someone would alter a picture from 60 years ago -
LOL!!!
Considering they mention the 60th anniversary of the book, you should be sending it to me, because I was obviously deprived :)
I still have a copy of "Goodnight Moon" in one of the boxes of books I haven't unpacked, along with the other books my daughter liked as a child-now you guys have me wanting to dig it out and read it-I read the Hank the Cowdog books and Ray Bradbury's "Halloween Tree" sometimes just because they are neat stories.
