Word For The Day, Thursday, November 10, 2005 - carceral
dictionaries ad nauseum | November 10, 2005 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

carceral • \KAHR-suh-rul\ • adjective
of, relating to, or suggesting a jail or prison

Example sentence:
When James first glimpsed his new campus, he thought there was something rather carceral about the school's tall wrought-iron fence.

Etymology: Describing a painting of John Howard visiting a prison in 1787, writer Robert Hughes reminds us that Howard was "the pioneer of English carceral reform" (Time Magazine, November 11, 1985). Huges might have said "prison reform," but what about Vladimir Nabokov, when, in his inimitable prose, he describes a prison scene in Invitation to a Beheading: "The door opened, whining, rattling and groaning in keeping with all the rules of carceral counterpoint." Here we find "carceral" not only practical but practically poetical. An adjective borrowed directly from Late Latin, "carceral" appeared shortly after "incarcerate" ("to imprison"), which first showed up in English around the mid-1500s; they're both ultimately from "carcer," Latin for "prison."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I never liked coffee until I moved to PA - it was a bit nippy up there - and you just can't live in that area and not go to WaWa for coffee....... I think it is a law or something.

Can I pour anyone else a cup?

I drank probably ten cups a day for years and years. My tummy just can't take the acid any longer. I drink apple juice in the morning. Oh, and I chugged a Propel that I keep behind the bed before I got up. I'm all sugared up!

Actually, Mrs. F & I were just down there for a weekend babysitting run. Took nephew & niece to Knott's Berry Farm (which was LAME the day we went -- all the good rides we broken down).

I'd be embarrassed to meet excess now 'cuz I let my hair WAY down here as compared to Regular Life.

When we took the kids on long automobile trips, we always made sure to take along some carcereal for when they got hungry. Lucky Charms was their favorite.

Very, very nice coffee urn.

I hate sinus colds. I get them all the time because of the dust here. Have to vacuum ceilings, walls and overhead fans about once a month or more.

The rain tonight will be great, though. Keeps the dust down.

my kids love propel, i don't care for it. i don't like flavored waters that have any sweetness to them. i like plain water, or if it is club soda, flavors are good, but i don't like that sweetness even though it is very slight.

Knott's Berry Farm used to be a wonderful place when I was a child there. There were no admission fees. There were only a couple of rides through a mine, and you paid as you went on the rides. It wasn't like Disneyland where you had the A through E tickets. Across from Knott's, there used to be an alligator farm. True. Don't think it's there any longer.

You were pretty close to the Nixon Library. Now that is really a wonderful place to go.

Not that I know.

he said yesterday "the Dems are in quicksand, and they think they are at the beach. they think they were handed a pina colada, when at best they got some propel water."
