In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
carceral \KAHR-suh-rul\ adjective
of, relating to, or suggesting a jail or prison
Example sentence:
When James first glimpsed his new campus, he thought there was something rather carceral about the school's tall wrought-iron fence.
Etymology: Describing a painting of John Howard visiting a prison in 1787, writer Robert Hughes reminds us that Howard was "the pioneer of English carceral reform" (Time Magazine, November 11, 1985). Huges might have said "prison reform," but what about Vladimir Nabokov, when, in his inimitable prose, he describes a prison scene in Invitation to a Beheading: "The door opened, whining, rattling and groaning in keeping with all the rules of carceral counterpoint." Here we find "carceral" not only practical but practically poetical. An adjective borrowed directly from Late Latin, "carceral" appeared shortly after "incarcerate" ("to imprison"), which first showed up in English around the mid-1500s; they're both ultimately from "carcer," Latin for "prison."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Good poem today - I like that
Thank you!
Hehehehehehe! I love it!
I know you're not in here tonight, Marteen, but thank you for showing me the web page. Cyber posted the two pictures above. The Simba the Cat resolution was less than the Halloween resolution, so that's why Simba's Christmas Tree is in there. Yes, he has his very own tree every year.
Simba has toys everywhere. We have to watch where we step in the morning. He especially likes feather toys. They are moved to different places every morning. He likes to bite our toes in the morning.
Me, too. And Arghie.
Great pictures! That reminds me that I've got two rolls of film I keep forgetting to dosomething with, and the digicam is here in the desk waiting to be hooked up...
Five years ago I almost croaked from having my teeth deep cleaned. I didn't know I had a condition that required me to take four 500 milligrams of antibiotics an hour before any cleaning.
I'm not the only one. Laura Earl has the same problem.
OMG! Who would want one of those? Are they charging a nickel a throw or something?
I can't get over how haggard they look. They would have to pay me and there isn't enough money in the world.
Marteen turned me on to putfile. It's free and not too difficult to use. I need to practice, so all y'alls are going to get some photos in here.
Thanks, Slip, and I'm working on it. A dab of therapeutic vodka can do wonders... ;)
Nauseating. Blecchhhhh.
A little dab will do ya. Actually, just have a Martini. No olive, though, it will get stuck in your teeth.
Me too and an A for you!
She was on Steve Gill's talk show this morning, giggling and trying to sound coy instead of the dried up old hag she is, and said she wasn't partisan. At that point, I had to stop listening or I would've lost my breakfast.
A+ for you but I have to ask. Who keeps bringing new toys into the house? ;)
