Word For The Day, Thursday, November 10, 2005 - carceral
dictionaries ad nauseum | November 10, 2005 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

carceral • \KAHR-suh-rul\ • adjective
of, relating to, or suggesting a jail or prison

Example sentence:
When James first glimpsed his new campus, he thought there was something rather carceral about the school's tall wrought-iron fence.

Etymology: Describing a painting of John Howard visiting a prison in 1787, writer Robert Hughes reminds us that Howard was "the pioneer of English carceral reform" (Time Magazine, November 11, 1985). Huges might have said "prison reform," but what about Vladimir Nabokov, when, in his inimitable prose, he describes a prison scene in Invitation to a Beheading: "The door opened, whining, rattling and groaning in keeping with all the rules of carceral counterpoint." Here we find "carceral" not only practical but practically poetical. An adjective borrowed directly from Late Latin, "carceral" appeared shortly after "incarcerate" ("to imprison"), which first showed up in English around the mid-1500s; they're both ultimately from "carcer," Latin for "prison."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Yup, Prexies.

Short for "Presidents".

Not to be confused with "Pixies".

Cat in the Cradle was written and sung by the deceased Harry Chapin.

Funny, Cyber and I were talking about Harry Chapin and Gordon Lightfoot last night.

Now THAT'S a Party School!

Jesse Lazear, the guy whose research cured Yellow fever (and who died from it because he experimented on himself)(and who turns out to be my 7th cousin) only hung out 1 year at W&J.

No caffeine in Propel, but a few vitamins and two grams of sugar. For caffeine you have to drink Red Bull. I drink that every now and again.

Eh. Prolly. I didn't have a great time there.

My big PostGraduate contributions to it have been the purchases of a 1) tie and 2) coffee mug.
