A Lynn woman accused of a brutal double-child abduction in Marlboro was captured last night at a hotel near Logan International Airport and she had packed up one child in a suitcase, police say.
Police say Kathy Trotta, 37, was found hiding in a hotel room at the Embassy Suites in East Boston with her 5-year-old child, whom she allegedly had abducted. Trotta had three tickets to the Bahamas via Miami, according to a news report.
The 5-year-old child was found inside an empty suitcase within the room at the Embassy Suites, said state police Lt. Martin Robichod.
A cab driver who took Trotta to the hotel recognized her from news reports of an Amber Alert and called for help, police say.
Police say Trotta and Denis J. Piper, 43, broke into a Marlboro home yesterday afternoon, beating and tying up a woman and abducting two children.
The children, Grace Trotta, 5, and Christian Borey, 3, who is the beating victims son, were both recovered unharmed.
Police were still hunting for Piper last night.
Police say the suspects grabbed both kids, but the intended target was the young girl.
When we responded . . . we found a woman tied up and beaten and her two children had been abducted and were nowhere to be found, said Marlboro police Chief Mark Leonard.
State police issued an Amber Alert for the couple, who are known to Lynn police.
After beating the mother, police said, the suspects stole the womans car and took off to a local Dunkin Donuts, where Trotta climbed into her waiting Cadillac DeVille.
The boy was later let go unharmed at the home of an acquaintance of one of the suspects in Malden.
The victims 18-year-old daughter found her mother tied up and beaten and called police. The mother, who offered Trottas child a foster home under the states Kinship program,, was not seriously injured, according to police.
Under the Kinship arrangement, children are placed with relatives first before other foster programs are used.
Get in there...please, hon, do it for Mommy.
Kathy Trotta. Word has it she was addicted to cocaine >>Police were still hunting for Piper last night.
He was found in Lynn this afternoon.
The Amber Alert was all over the radio and TV, and highway signs...several people recognized pictures of the victims/
accused, or went by descriptions. It worked.
From the Lynn (MA) Item:
>>Sam Alihodzic, a resident who has lived next to the building where Trotter was reportedly living, said people in (the house), including Trotter*, yelled and fought at all hours including 5 a.m. He said Trotter lived on the first floor and claims he saw her "beating the crap" out of two children while arguing with a man on the building's first floor.
*--for some reason, this paper spells last name differently
from Boston Globe:
>>Five hours earlier, police said, the mother, Catherine Trotta, 38, and an accomplice, Dennis J. Piper, had wielded a knife and billy club to kidnap Trotta's daughter, Grace Trotta, 5, and an unrelated boy, Christian Borey, 3, from a Marlborough foster home.
About three hours after the kidnapping, Christian was found unhurt in Malden, police said. Tips led police to Logan International Airport, where airport employees told authorities that Trotta had unsuccessfully sought to catch a flight out of the area.

Trotta is scheduled to be arraigned in a Marlborough court today on four counts of kidnapping, one count of assault and battery, one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and one count of conspiracy. Piper would face the same charges if caught, police said.
[he was apprehended earlier today in Lynn]
The dramatic hotel rescue capped a frenetic day of searching after the 3 p.m. kidnapping, which triggered an Amber Alert, with flashing electronic road signs alerting motorists of the kidnappers' identities and media outlets relaying the information nearly nonstop all evening.
''I think the Amber Alert was critical. It really gets all systems up so everyone is focused on locating the children," said a State Police spokesman, Lieutenant Eric Anderson.

''Obviously, we found her unfit," said Denise C. Monteiro, a state DSS spokeswoman, who said Trotta has had extensive substance abuse problems.
Apparently the foster father is Catherine Trotta's uncle; it was a "kinship foster" relationship.
As she was being hustled in to be booked, Trotta was heard saying that she put the child in the suitcase "to protect her". Apparently she felt that her daugher was being
molested. (Her boyfriend was found today at his condo
in Lynn.)
