ESPN.com Page 2: The Damn! Moment of Week 8 (NFL)

Classic NFC East clash. The division's best defense (Washington) taking on the division's most balanced offense (the Giants). The hitting would be fierce, the scoring low and close.

Or so you probably figured.

This one basically ended about 1 p.m. Sunday when the Giants won the coin toss. On their first play, Tiki Barber bounced it outside, sliced through four or five Redskins defenders -- who looked as if they weren't quite awake -- and was off to the races for 57 yards. That set up the first of five Jay Feely field goals.

And that would be all the points the Giants would need at home.

Stunningly, their defense turned Joe Gibbs' Redskins into Diet Sprite Zero. Zero caffeine, zero carbs, zero sugar, zero points.

Giants 36, Redskins 0.

Damn, Joe.

This was the first time Gibbs has been shut out in a regular-season game in his three-ring career (the Giants beat the Redskins 17-0 in the 1986 NFC championship). Three Super Bowl championships, no shutouts -- until Sunday, when his offense failed to score against the NFL's 31st-worst defense.

What next, the Chicago White Sox sweeping the World Series?

The Redskins, now 4-3, had played well enough to win all six of their previous games, but the Giants made Washington's team look as hapless as Bush or Cheney in a "Saturday Night Live" sketch. The Redskins totaled 125 yards, converting only two of 12 third downs. That allowed the Giants, who had lost the time of possession in all six of their previous games, to almost double the Redskins in ball-control time.

Mark Brunell, who had been one of the NFL's hottest passers, again looked as though he should be coaching quarterbacks...

Don't forget 'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly', a particularly amusing 'Matchsport', and that other thing.

Ping Ultra Sonic 007 to get on or off this ping list.

Come hither G-Men; according to Skip, we've made the Skins into a soft drink. :^)

If they 'threw' the game because they felt 'sorry', then that doesn't bode well for your team. They are pros. They are paid to play. They are paid to win. They can't afford to 'throw' games.

Long story short: they were utterly outclassed on Sunday. On offense AND defense.

The Skins next play Philly, Tampa, Oakland, and then San Diego.

Prepare yourself for a 5-game losing streak. .....minimum.

The most overrated team in the NFL won't be fooling anyone much longer.

If that were the case, I'd be split. I mean, I like the Giants, no doubt...but I'd be sentimental for Peyton, as he's been in the League longer and deserves a shot. Eli has plenty of time to play.

Not sure about Philly in that proposed losing streak.

Take away the blocked FG returned for a TD against SD and the Eagles are 3 and 4.

Eagle's one dimensional offense will cause that team more woes than wins in the coming weeks.

I was there...but the skins did not show up. Their heads and bodies were not in the game. Their receivers/backs dropped 10 passes thrown into their hands in the first half. They missed tackle after tackle. My feeling is that they (unconciously) decided that they were not going to come into Giants Stadium and beat the g-men the week of The Duke's death.

My son-in-law is a Virginia boy and lifelong skins' fan. I called him after the game and told him that his real team did not play that game. Just my 2 cents.

At least the Redskins had an excuse for laying down in a game. Down here, we're trying to figure out what the hell happened to the Saints against Miami. Even the announcers were questioning their will, especially in Tiger Stadium with a hard-core crowd of 60,000.

The probability that the Redskins threw the game is about as great as the probability that a person throws his back out on purpose.....

No offense intended, but I don't buy it. I don't think Gibbs would buy it either.

My reasoning.....There are so few games in the NFL season, no one can afford to play like they know they don't have a snowballs chance in hell. Every game is important, especially when you play only once a week.

Baseball, basketball, hockey.... now they could since they have so many games. But in football, one loss hurts. The Giants wanted it that much more than the Skins did. They got outplayed on both sides of the ball and I believe the Giants will be a much better team for it.

No offense taken. As I said--I was there, and the skins showed a total lack of concentration on both sides of the ball. The only one who played well was Brunell, and they kept dropping the ball. Our secondary is weak, but they made us look like the '77 Steelers.

My theory is impossible to prove, but for me it's the best explanation that fits the facts. The skins are a much much better team than that.

And two other things we can probably agree on..... The Cowboys and the Eagles suck. ;-)

I'm sitting out our next home game against the Vikes, but I will be there for the Iggles. My son-in-law is trying to get tix for the jints-skins game on Xmas Eve Day in DC since we come down to VA every Christmas. Hopefully both teams will still be contending which will make the game quite "intense."
