That's a REALLY big dog.
I'm thinking of the food bills, the broken crockery and furniture, and the cleanup logistics . . . I think I like my 45 pound dog better.
Sadly, the bigger dogs don't live for very long. Life expectancy of a GD is somewhere under ten years.

Some live around 4 years. They were bred too big too fast, IMHO. They outgrew their hearts.

When our lab went blind about 10 years ago...when she was then let out of the house, she would always wander to the same spot in the yard...and I had this 3 foot diameter bald spot right in the middle of the lawn for 5 years..

I had heard that also, but a quick check around the net indicated 7-10 years. That's probably optimistic, as you say. I know people who've lost them at 4-5 years - as you say, the body's just too big for the heart. The same thing happens to people who suffer from pituitary gigantism.

Years ago I had a good friend/neighbor who had a big black monster Dane named "Panzer". He was like a 100+ lb gentle puppy. Even my little girl wasn't afraid of him. He was a scream.
To: ken5050
He was allowed on the couch for ONE photo session.
ONE. ;-D
Problem is, the minpin always gives him permission to do stuff, behind my back, LOL!

As always, it depends largely on the bloodlines.
There are some good breeders out there who have Danes that are living to 10-12 years on average.

It seems to me that the proportions of this dog are not that extreme whn compared to the Irish Wolfhound, which I always believed was generally accepted as the largest breed:

the size of that dogs' poops have got to be enormous! One of the funniest things I ever saw was when a lady was walking a GD and the dog assumed the poop position.
She ran around to the back of the dog with a plastic grocery bag and caught the bombs as they fell.

And I thought my Great Pyrenees was big at 5'6 & 140lbs. When he goes to the bathroom outside, the "droppings" are not called poop...they are land mines.

He looks like a horse...They are definitely more "stout" than a a Dane, but not sure if they are "taller?"

Did you ever see that Seinfled episode where he said if Aliens ever spied one of us picking up after a dog, that they would think the dogs were in charge of earth?

My great aunt raised Irish Wolfhounds. One of them weighed in at 168lbs, and stood 6'4"on rear legs without paws extended and could run 30mph.
It didn't like other dogs, but it got along fine with cats. Go Figure.
