First, we're running Windows XP on a HP computer.
Ok, so Jr. M is trying to record something through the computer microphone but something isn't working. Thought the old mic didn't work so ran to Walmart for a new one. Bought the only brand they sold - Labtec.
Can't find where to install the new mic into "add new hardware" or even if it needs to be installed or if it will work by just plugging it in. Yes, we did plug it into the proper slot - pink cord into pink port. Yes, the volume is on.
So, we clicked on the Start Menu, then Programs, then Accessories, then Entertainment, and finally Sound Recorder. The little Sound Recorder window pops up and we clicked the red button to record and ..... nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you have your mic in the right hole it should record if you also have a sound card in your computer. If the answer is yes to both of those try a free music production software program to record with called Audacity. Just google for it.

Open up the volume control window by clicking on the speaker icon on the lower right portion of the task-bar next to the clock. when the window opens make sure the mute box is not checked for the function you are attempting to use.

Well doesn't look like anyone is going to step in here so.... make sure the microphone is not muted. On your soundcard settings you should have the option for record and playback. Make sure under recording the microphone checkbox is checked. Also make sure the recording volume under recording control is up sufficiently. You may have the option for 3db+ boost... try with the box on and off (if available)

Yes, default is checked in Audio Properties. We have Nvidia4 if that helps.
