No, it isn't. Lots of people aren't familiar with horses, even here in the Great Southwest of the US of A!

I was lucky: as a child, I lived not far from the race track, and in the summer, the stalls were filled. Rodeos were so common that every small town had an arena. Most of us kids learned to ride shortly after we learned to walk.

It is interesting the different approaches to horses - in Britain and Ireland, horse riding is regarded as 'posh', in America, particularly in your part of the States, it is mainly a working class pursuit - I guess those differences stem from the histories of those countries; in Britain and Ireland, the lords rode horses, the commoner rode donkeys, whereas in the States the working man rode a horse!!
