Dumber people can run Linux

Here's the other thing: it worked. It said, "Choose a user name and a password." It logged me in. And there was an entire computer, ready to go. It connected to the Internet. Firefox went places. Email downloaded. OpenOffice…officed. I mean, call that open source? Where's the anguish and pain? Where's the six weeks of downloading drivers and learning how to compile source code? A shocking lapse of standards, I call it. If Linux can be run by people as dumb as the people who can run Windows, it's the end of civilization as we know it. Don't these people understand that writers need things to complain about if we're to be able to make a living?

On a side note, I switched to OS 10. It's so easy to use...... Novell did a really good job.

Yes, the distribution that the author built, Ubuntu, is getting a lot of attention; I will probably build one soon myself. It's the number one on the page hit ranking listed at www.distrowatch.org.

That phrase popped into my sick mind yesterday when I saw a sarcastic reference to the 'honest intellectual discussions' that occur on Microsoft-Linux threads.

I think it was on a Harriet Miers thread and her religion was a semi topic, and wham Satan leaped to mind. I just put it with Linux, it seemed to fit :-)

Ms. Grossman installed Ubuntu, which has become a very popular distribution of Linux. If memory serves, it's an offshoot of the Debian distribution.

i gave Fedora a try, i got to say they brought bloated software to a new level. 4 discs??? to install XP on had one disc.

now kubuntu is nice and small, that's a good distro.

try kubuntu first. it's the same distro but with the KDE desktop instead of Gnome.

KDE looks like windows and Gnome looks like apple.

Uh huh.

With all of the software that's packed onto those 4 disks you'd have to have 20 or so to match it.

Four 'wares I can think of off the top of my head. Windows, Office, Nero, and photoshop. Fedora comes with so much more.

And check your memory usage. All your bloatware are belong to microsoft.

I wouldn't say "bloated." The reason for this is that XP comes with the OS. That's it. FC4 comes with the OS, several WMs, Apache, GIMP, Office, a Quicken-like application, Network utilities, sound utilities, disc-burning utilities, multiple browsers, programming languages and IDEs (Off the top of my head, I can count 4-5 languages and 3 IDEs), multiple text editors, etc.

The actual OS is smaller than XP and is only a fraction of the install.

FC4 is meant to be a General Purpose distro. That means it's more than a base OS--it includes all the software most people would want to use, plus a good selection of software that would appeal to a broad cross-section of users.

There are other distros that target other users--DSL, for instance, only contains a small OS and a couple of browsers. It uses the same OS as FC4, but it weighs in at under 50MB.
