You could do a story about shape-shifting in a hurricane. Maybe that's the traumatic event where she discovers she is a shape-shifter. She's outside in a hurricane, holding on to her fence, and she suddenly becomes a Mourning Dove. This is not really a good thing, as she soon loses grasp of the fence and ends up just hunkering down in a Mango tree.

What if she shapeshifts at really random and awkward times? See... her identical twin is a shapeshifter too... and whenever one of them becomes something... so does the other one... nomatter what is happening.
She had just pushed open the door to the ladies room when she could feel the shift starting... "Oh, no... not now..." But it was too late.
