The Hobbit Hole XXV - Fare you well! Fare you well!
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 10/15/2005 7:13:08 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Fare you well! Fare you well!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

They're so cute in the sink!

Does Halvah like getting wet, or does she just like being in the sink?

I could post a pic of Josie in the sink. Maybe even in the tub. Would the duct-tape keeping her in there count against me, do you suppose?

I think she's just hoping for a drink of really, really fresh water.

But she also paddles in her water bowl...scoots it around. Because of her, I had to buy a really heavy ceramic dog bowl to use for their water. Otherwise she tips it and spills water everywhere.

From what I've heard of Josie, you'd have to sedate her to get the duct tape off, fer sure.

Ow!

Josie is fascinated by the toilet. She's all like "why... in the world... do you do that?" then she tries to show me the litter box and how its so much simpler to just bury it, since somebody else always cleans it out for you...

Gotta admit... she's got a point there.

It's funny... Josie was supposed to go to the vet a few weeks ago. Dad and Dona were gonna take her in to look at this thing on her back... and I'd commented on the thread about how that was not going to go well... but they were all confident that they had a good cat-carrier box and everything would be OK.

Heh.

She never quite got to the vet. The whole "getting the cat into the box" part never really worked according to plan.

I hate to say I told-ya-so... but...

The only way that cat is ever going in a vehicle again will involve traq darts.

I could get her to the vet... All I need are falconry gloves.

We had one cat almost that bad growin' up. Davy. Big ugly orange cat with a lot of scars. I can remember one time trying to get him into a carrier to take him in for a rabies shot. Mom finally caught him, but she said during the interval it took to hurl him into the carrier, her life flashed before her eyes. She was pretty sure he was gonna end it all for her. Even with gloves she got a good sized gash down one arm. Psycho cat!

However, even a two second ride in the car was enough to TOTALLY subdue him. He wouldn't get sick, or at least didn't show it. But he just totally gave up. The vets were convinced we were lying about how hard it was to cage the guy, because by the time they saw him, he was always limp as a rag doll.

*sigh* Speaking of all this, I'm FINALLY taking Tam to the vet tomorrow. He's had a bad eye again for eons. I'm not expecting it to be happy news. But at this point, I just want it to not be swollen. If he's lost some vision, oh well. He's insanely happy most of the time...doesn't seem to bother him any.

My Noodle-baby, who weighed over 100 lbs., took great exception to being put in the car, 'cause he knew it would take him to the vet.

Once, my daddy cross-tied him in the back seat of our '80 Bonneville --- aka "Street Tank" --- and muzzled him. He somehow defeated the muzzle and bit the vet anyway. After that, the vet gave the syringes and tags to my daddy, who administered the shots with no trouble, no drama.

Noodles never, ever went back to the vet. A mobile vet came to him, once, to cut a tumor off his head, but he never went back. Every year, we would take the other dogs, and come back with a syringe ...

I once thought that elbow-length oven mitts would be enough.

I was wrong. :-)

From there on out I just told her: "Whatever you do... don't come down with anything expensive."

It seemed to have worked for a while. I like her just fine. But... she is just not a ~nice~ kitty. I just wish she liked me at least a little bit.

Story of my life. In so many ways. Maybe that's why I like her. She's a metaphor. :-)

Heh.

The last time I had Josie in a vehicle was about seven years ago, when I moved from my then-ex apartment in bellevue to the beach house. I didn't have a "real" cat carrier box. I'd made one out of a cardboard box and lots and lots of duct tape.

Didn't work. She chewed out of it in mere minutes of getting on the road. This was in my Toyota 4x4 pickup that I owned at the time. The sound coming out of her was exquisite in that particular brain-curdling sort of way. If you took a cat and used pliers to verrrry slowwwly peel the flesh off her tail, that cat would make a similar sort of noise.

Then there was the stuff coming out of her. Both ends... in volumes and at velocities that you'd think were unlikely given a cat of her size.

But the capper was her instintence, after getting out of the box and fouling the inside of my truck with vile substances that would take months to remove, to wedge herself under the brake pedal while I was driving down the freeway.

Big mistake. She *very* nearly got to find out what "hit the ground running" meant in real-time.

Needless to say... If it comes down to a choice between getting her in a vehicle again, and say... performing self-dentistry... I'd reach for the pliers and a bottle of whiskey first.

This is why my mother calls me to take HER cats to the vet. She lives about an hour from me.

What I do: I get a nice large bath towel and drape it over my torso and one shoulder. I then pick up the cat and wrap it as quickly as possible into a cat burrito of sorts. Then I either hold tightly onto it and go to the vet that way (this is mt preferred tactic), or I shove it into the carrier, towel and all. I have never had a problem this way except for all the cat fur on my clothes.

Hmmm... Cat burrito... as I recall, that was how Josie got her original shots.

Through the towel with a long needle.

Josie is fascinated by the toilet.

A co-worker of mine once had a cat that liked to watch the toilet bowl drain. She had to keep the cat out of the bathroom or she'd flush the toilet all day just to watch the water.

Mine learned early that going berserk at things they don't like would be much more painful to them in the long run. They just lay there for shots.
