No Hangovers for Two Years! [Now 3 Years!]
self | October 8, 2005 | RobFromGa

Posted on 10/08/2005 7:33:57 AM PDT by RobFromGa

October 8, 2003 is the date that I quit drinking for good. It has been a great two years!

When I was drinking, I thought that life would be impossibly boring without alcohol. How can you enjoy parties, football games, vacations, weekends, etc without alcohol? I found out that not only is it possible to enjoy these things, that in many ways they are made better without the "buzz".

I haven't had a hangover in two years and that is a blessing.

I have occasionally had brief thoughts that I might be able to drink normally now that I have controlled myself for this length of time. But I understand myself better now. The fact that I would even consider such a question and action even for a millisecond is a sign of my lack of control over alcohol. My only sane solution is to keep it out of my body.

I urge anyone who suspects that they may have a drinking problem to find help and deal with the issue. I wish I had quit when I was 30 instead of 41.

Almost a year ago, I posted a thread on FR, If You Suspect You Might Have A Drinking Problem (An Open Letter). There might be some help there for you if you are trying to quit.

Thanks to all who have helped me to quit and to stay sober.

I was on this thread long before you arrived on it.
My post was not "aimed" at you.

I really meant the compliment.

WOW! I haven’t had a drink in X years! WOW! Are you still drinking, smoking, etc. etc.? I am so much better than you because I quit. It gets tiring after awhile.

Feel Guilty or just ashamed? It's not about being better,it's about living. Whats wrong with encouragement for a success that others may find impossible to achieve! If you don't like such threads THEN go to some you find interesting.

Rob,

Congratulations, man!! We've posted a bunch to each other on the threads as well as privately... I truly couldn't be happier for you!!

I've been one of the blessed "first time winners" (so far, ofcourse....) : ) My sobriety date is March 15th 1993...

Many have told me, and I may have passed this on to you already, so forgive me if I have.... Around the time of your anniversary date, hold on to your a*s! It's just a strange time for many people in recovery, and being extra vigilant is a very good idea....

Xcamel, I would assume you know this from your screename (if this is why you chose it)and perhaps you explained it privately to Rob, but Rob, the "camel" is a very symbolic figure for those of us in recovery with respect to the "One Day At A Time" concept... A camel starts every day on it's knees, and it ends every day on it's knees, and is able to go 24 hours without taking a drink.... So, I hope to forever remain a camel... As I hope you both do as well.... : )

Great Job, My Friend!!

Dave

Xcamel, check FReepmail...

I am staying sober even though the Atlanta Braves are a very good reason to get hammered. Eighteen innings and they're eliminated...

I'm what's called a hard case. I work hard, I play hard, I drank hard and I love hard. Double entendre duly noted. :-}

Everything to excess is my general modus operandi as well, although I'm trying to relax more.

Congratulations, Rob. I'm glad that you post these updates. It is encouraging to read of your continued success!

I'm not a drinker, but my husband has been quit for almost a year. It took a serious car accident to wake him up.

Thanks for the update!
