Clement (6.0 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 109 pitches)7/24 @ CHA
Everett, Konerko, and Rowand all homered off Clement.
Clement actually pitched well, but was unlucky with those homers.
In the game against Clement and our BP, only Rowand hit well (3/4) other than Perez's 1-3 with a BB. Everyone else had a poor batting average that game (only 1 of the 3 homers were not solo shots).
He just needs to keep his pitches down to make it tough to get those deep fly balls.
Contreras (5.2 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 116 pitches)
Ortiz and Tek both homered off Contreras.
Extremely high pitch count for Contreras in only 5.2 IP.
In the game against Contreras and the ChiSox BP, Millar went 2-3 with 1 BB; Tek went 2-4; and Cora went 2-3 (and the one missed hit was a deep ball that served as an RBI sac fly). Cora started the season with the Indians and was facing Contreras for the second time this year, FWIW.
Manny looked awful against Contreras, with 3 Ks. He needs to look at some video of him before Tuesday.
Interestingly, Millar owns Contreras.
It's all about the pitching and Chicago has it. They shut down a Cleveland team desperate to win and who had been hot until running into a Tampa team that has given the Sox and Yankees problems all year. The Red Sox rely upon walks to make their offense work. Outside of Damon they have no real base stealing speed and they strike out a lot.
0-3 and they go home in round 1
They just ran out of gas at the end. Hot teams cool off at some point and these guys had a great run. The fans out there showed great class in supporting their team and thanking them for a great season.
Beware the Tribe next year.
You have to jump Contreras' fastball and smack it around to get him off his game. If you let him establish his fastball for strikes he will kill you with his splitter.
Clement needs to get his slider and 2 seamer over. If he can do that and keep the walks to a minimum he can do okay. Once guys get on base he tends to lose focus and panic.
The Black Sox don't get on base like the Red Sox do but they also steal a lot more and can create havoc on a team They play aggressive and force teams to make plays.
All comes down to whether or not we can light up their pitching early. Their bullpen is rather good....
Agreed. I wanted the Red Sox and Tribe to get in, and the Yanks to miss out. Not only because it's be nice to have NYY sit one out for a change, but I do have friends in Cleveland/Akron, etc...and have been to several Tribe games when I visit them.
I believe the playoff teams are the same as last yr except
for AL Central and NL West, right?

Too bad in a way that two teams that finished with identical w-l records couldn't get a one-game playoff to decide
who gets div. and who gets WC (they used head-to-head)

Aww... sorry about your Tribe, Petronski, but as a Red Sox fan, I had to root against them. The Indians are a very good team and put up a good fight. I'm sure they will be back next year with a vengeance!

No sweat on the rooting against them, it doesn't have any effect. The Indians lost all on their own. ;O)
Yes. He's called Chief Wahoo, and is perhaps the coolest, funniest pro sports logo. So we got that going for us . . . which is nice.
I'm also worried that Boston may not have what it takes this year to beat a team like the Chicago White Sox...
I'm actually amazed they still get away with that (supposedly) politically incorrect 'grinning Indian' logo... ;-)
I'm a Red Sox fan out here in Chicago, and I couldn't believe that the White Sox would sweep Cleveland. I thought for sure the Indians would take Friday night easy. I thought for sure they'd win one. But we'll take it!

It's a point of contention, but changing it would be a disaster. It's actually a point of honor:
In its early years, the team now known as the Cleveland Indians had been known by several different names: the "Spiders", the "Naps", the "Blues", and the "Bronchos." The team received its final name in 1915 in a contest to determine its moniker. According to the Cleveland Indians' management, Chief Wahoo is meant to be a tribute to Louis Francis Sockalexis, a member of the Penobscot tribe who was the first Native American to play professional baseball. Team officials have insisted that Chief Wahoo is only a caricature not meant to demean Native Americans and that they have gone through great lengths not to associate the mascot with insensitive images such as tomahawks, teepees, and horsebacked warriors.
Same here! He's doing just fine on the bench in his team mom/Manny translator/class clown role for the Sox. ;-)
We actually did cheer on the Tribe in person one day this summer. My husband and I attended a Cleveland Indians vs NY Yankees game on Saturday, July 9 at Yankee Stadium. (There was a Yankees "Old-Timers" game before the CLE game.) We were heading back from Sean Hannity's Freedom concert in NJ, so we figured it would be nice to stop at Yankee Stadium and see a game on the way home. The Tribe won that day 8-7!
You'll have to forgive us: We couldn't bring ourselves to cheer for Aaron Boone... ;-)
