Spoken like a true loser. I notice the stupid Marlins and Diamondbacks haven't given back their trophies! Go Yankees!
Oy who?
Ahh, shut up. ;^)
What a trip. I cursed Boone out all season, I was cursing him out when he was at bat before the home run. I was pregnant and almost went into labor, what a memory!
The reason is the same as The Yankees / Red Sox, the tie-breaker is the team that wins the 19-game season series. The Yankees have already won 10.
The Yankess are AL Eastern Division Champs.
The one game playoff is for teams tied for a wild card berth.
I was confused because the teams flipped a coin to determine where a playoff game would be held if they ended the season with the same record. Perhaps the toss was made when Baltimore was still hypothetically in the hunt and the coin toss was for the possibility that Boston and New York ended the season tied for the wild card berth.
BTW, the NL has a little race left, in case anyone is watching. Philly could tie Houston tomorrow for wild card.
Beat me to it by 30 seconds!
The Yankees clinched their eighth consecutive American League East title on Saturday with an 8-4 win over the rival Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Although the two teams can finish the season tied, that scenario would have one of the teams winning the division and the other making the playoffs as the Wild Card, so a one-game playoff would not take place. New York secured the season series with its 10th win of the year against Boston, assuring the Bombers of another division crown via winning the tiebreaker.
Waaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!
That's a thoughtful reply.
You are wrong.
If Boston wins tomorrow, they and the Yanks will be tied (Cleveland would be eliminated) and the Yanks would win the division title due to a better head to head record.
Right, in reply to a very thoughtful comment.
Go YANKS!!!
In that case, Boston and New York would have had to play off basically to determine who was the wild card team to play Cleveland.
As it is now, if Boston wins tomorrow, they will have a better record than Cleveland regardless of the outcome of the Cleveland game, and the only tie would be for the AL Eastern Division title, which is determined by the winner of the season series, in this case, the Yankees.
If Boston loses tomorrow, and Cleveland wins, the Yankees win the division outright, anyway, and a wildcard playoff game has occur between Boston and Cleveland because they tie by having the same record.
If Cleveland loses, Boston goes regardless of the outcome of their game.
John Sterling kept saying during the latter stages of the game that the Yankees clinch if they win and Cleveland loses. The analysis above is my best guest to explain that.
I'm not criticizing them for their victory if they win. I'm ctriticizing them for buying a victory, and spending way too much for it.
At $200+ million, they should at least have a St. Louis level of mastery of the AL. For $200 million, they're just not getting their money's worth.
Thanks for the explanation. I stand corrected. Sounds like a poor way to settle a division title, btw.
Ya know I could gloat, ping certain people, rub their noses in it, but I won't. (Not until the Yankees win the Series. Then I'll be real obnoxious;^)

I'm with you.
