Saying "Keep a stiff upper lip, kids", and "lie and be completely fake" are two entirely different parental commands, regardless of the situation or motive.
Is the original quote incorrect?

No, but the context is. They had been up late into the night, early morning. They were travelling 8+ hours on a bus, with no idea where they were going, or how long it would take. The girls were breaking down in tears, and mom was getting them settled down.
A comment was made (paraphrased) "I don't want them to see me like this", and mom was telling them they didn't have to show the other teams how poorly they were handling the unknown and the long bus ride.
Basically she was telling them to put on a false front and pretend that everything was going fine, even though it wasn't. Kinda like telling 'em to "put on poker faces, girls".
In the context of the game, I did not think it was grossly out of place or character. They were under a great deal of stress, and she probably used a poor choice of words, but the meaning to the girls at the time was clear. "Let's pretend that everything is honkey-dorey."
