In Erie County NY we are facing a 50% property tax increase over the next 2 years. In addition, various fees for just about every county related activity are to be raised. The 1% sales tax increase is still a possibility. This is being done to reduce (not eliminate) the huge deficit the county has built up for years.
Our town, is as far away from the government service tit suckers (Buffalo) in the county as you can get. Everyone I have spoken to in my area would love to become part of the county located to our East, which would be Wyoming Co.. They are not perfect, who is, but they don't have the financial hell hole known as Buffalo.
While 100% of the people I have spoken to like this idea, 100% have no clue as to: 1-is it legal and possible>? 2-how to proceed.
Any of the brain trust in freeper land care to offer suggestions?
While our location would preclude associating with another State, the move to Wyoming county would help us and send a huge signal to the inept politicians running Erie County and Buffalo, NY.
The County is the extension of the State government. So I assume you would start by A)researching the topic on the State level(such as your State's Constitution) B)start talking to the State Representatives of those two Counties. To be honest I don't you can do this.
Does your town but up against the other county? I can see it possibly happening if that is the case. Since all they would have to do is move the boundry line.
There is a town in Vermont that wants to secede to New hampshire. There is no common border. they would basiclly be an island of New hampshire within vermont.
Ah, heart be still. Nobody in this town wants to be in NY state. I'll see what I can find on this. It would be better that the County switch.
Thank you my Freeper friend.
Let me know how this goes.
More seriously, in New York the state legislature can alter county boundaries - contact your assemblyman and state senator to see if they'll get the ball rolling.
Love the Texas idea also. I have just begun this today, and will use your suggestion.
I have been keeping my Erie County legislator informed of this thread and will expand the list.
Thanks general_re.
FWIW, I think the red bits of Upstate need a new state. We could take some of the red bits of PA along with us, too. I think that might be even better than switching counties.
A Western New York State would be attractive if it did not include Buffalo, Lackawana, Niagara Falls and a few first ring suburbs as these are entrenched dumbocrap ghettos.
