one man's opinion.......

Posted on 09/25/2005 8:19:55 PM PDT by ken5050

Good Sunday evening to you, fellow Freeper baseball fanatics. Great week just past, and an unreal last week to the season upon us..I wanted to get the thread up now, since I may not have a chance to do so tomorrow..The races are wilder, and tighter, than ever..

Grimly I'm forced to observe that it would appear to be Cleveland or Boston for the wildcard.

Don't give up, yet.

Like I said in my post, on paper we should win and the Yanks should lose. If we do that and the Yanks lose, and it's a big if, we are right where we wanted to be-- win 2 of 3 this weekend and avoid any need for a play-in game with the Yanks by winning the division. If Cleveland wins tonight and 2 of 3 this weekend (and we do the same), they will be sole owners of the WC-- leaving the Yanks out of the playoffs. If the ChiSox lose tonight and you win, you could sweep and win the division.

Lots of possibilities.

I haven't given up, but the universe of possibilities has shrank (shrunk? shrinked?) considerably. I believed on Sunday that 5 or 6 would be needed. Now only 4 are possible.

The Indians no longer control their own destiny.

Not true at all. The best the ChiSox can manage on their own is a tie for the division, with a forced play-in game. You are 3 games back. If the ChiSox win tonight and so do you, they are still only 3 GB. You face them 3 times. Each win, knocks off 1 of those GBs. 3-3=0 GB. All is not lost. 2005 Cleveland Indians, your AL Central Division Champs. Believe!

Lee pitched an unreal game last night....I think he deserves the AL CYA....

CWS have a big advantage if they can post a win this afternoon..however, to expect that both Contreras, who has won his last 8, and Small, who has won his last 9, will BOTH win today..well, it ain't gonna happen..

Well, we're heading up to Boston in a few minutes for our last game at Fenway this season (hubby has a meeting in Boston before the game). Weather is not looking good for this evening, unfortunately... could be a rain delay/rainout.

In any event, let's hope for the a GREAT game tonight for the Sox... hope Clement is "on". GO SOX!!! (And Orioles!)

A slight diversion from the agony/ecstacy of the last days of the pennant races..a very good article in the Sports section of today's NY Times, a profile of MLBB Ump Bruce Froemming, and interesing comments on the state of umpires, and umpiring, today, Umpire revels in the calls, and in getting them right

Definitely worth the read...

Have fun..BTW..FYI.article in todays NY POST says that Wells will retire after the season...he is "upset" by comments from some teammates that this year's team is not as ghood as last year's because of the loss of Pedro and Loewe..Who knew Wells had a "sensitive" side?

I may have misspoke. By winning today, they ChiSox guarantee that their record is no worse than yours no matter what, and the ChiSox win the head-to-head tiebreaker, like the Yanks do with us. I apologize. As far as the WC, it is still in your own hands. The worst that can happen if you win 4 straight is a play-in game.

I like Cleveland for the Wild Card over the Sox. CWS have no need to extend their starters over the series with Cleveland.

Red Sox have to earn their way there.

He gets rattled far too easily. No mental toughness, no ability to bear down and get past mistakes. Overall lack of confidence.
