ABC Radio - Tugboat captain pushing a barge - stuck between Beaumont and Port Arthur

Just heard on KLBJ Austin, a report on a tug captain who left Houston and headed east to Baton Rouge to avoid Hurricane Rita which was supposed to land at Port Lavaca, TX - west of Houston.

Now Rita is headed straight for Beaumont-Port Arthur and this poor guy is stuck with a tug boat and a 180 foot barge in between SHUT DOWN locks in the Port Arthur area.

They shut down the navigation in Port Arthur and now this poor soul has nowhere to go and he has a Cat 4 Hurricane heading towards him!

Even if you are not a praying person, I think this guy needs whatever meta-physical help you can send him.

In between locks might be a safe place to be

That really depends on what frontal island cover he has beteen him and the coast, but the intra-coastal waterway - which you can find on any map - usually is only one island away from the open Gulf of Mexico.

Yeap, you're right on that one.

It will be a hard stand for him to make. It will be daylight soon. Wishing him the best.

Is this the barge Rick Leventhal can see from the parking structure at a casino in Port Arthur? They think it broke loose from it's moorings and is heading for an I-10 overpass.
