Texas Motor Speedway to serve as FEMA staging area

By JEFF WILSON Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Texas Motor Speedway will serve as a staging ground for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which could house as many as 600 supply trucks in far north Fort Worth until they are called to aid in the recovery from Hurricane Rita, speedway president Eddie Gossage said.

TMS will also open its kitchens to help FEMA prepare food, Gossage said, and FEMA personnel will have access to restrooms and shower facilties on speedway grounds.

Gossage said TMS was contacted as a possible site to be used in various capacities after Hurricane Katrina.

FEMA called again Wednesday.

"They called and said they'd like to use our acreage and parking lots," Gossage said. "The more we talked, the more we realized we could supply even more. They love the fact that it's right on the Interstate (35), so as soon as it passes they can be on their way."

Gossage said speedway officials are monitoring Rita for possible damage to facilities.

Atlanta Motor Speedway, a sister facility to TMS in Hampton, Ga., suffered damage in July from a tornado that was spawned by Tropical Storm Cindy.

"The kind of damage that's possible is knocking out glass, and wind and rain blowing through suites," Gossage said. "We don't have any great concerns here.

"I think we're probably doing the best thing by serving as an area to help FEMA get prepared and go in to help the folks in the affected areas."

20% chance of afternoon showers, and mostly cloudy for today, according to NOAA.

Do volunteers, when they're not working, get to play on the track? ;)

Thanks, good to be here. :)

Right now, we are discussing "unbattening" the hatches and if miss Rita will come back.

I like the cave effect, wife doesn't, but she's the one hesitant to unboard.LOL

Afternoon, good pic.

I saw a C5 take off from Moffet a couple weeks ago, it was awe inspiring to watch it.

It was amazing that it was actually staying in the air.

Made it very hard to drive as well
