I'm Catholic and am not as well versed in the Bible as my Protestant brothers & sisters but I do recall it being said in the Bible "So be prepared, for you don't know what day your Lord is coming." Matthew 24:42
Luke 21:25 - And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
and
And, read all of Mathew 24, Jesus talks about what signs to look for.

As you can see, Jesus expressly stated that we will not know the day when He will return. How do we do that if we do not study the prophecies of scripture and look for their fulfillment?
You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him…
He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does. And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.
