I've had a similar (although much less deadly) experience with camel crickets.
Camel Crickets are not only really ugly, they have a painful bite. It sent this 8 yr. old(took place many decades ago)screaming into the house with the little bugger still attached, where my great aunt whacked it with a frying pan, breaking 2 of my fingers. To stop my crying, she gave me a couple glasses of wine, for medicinal purposes. Of course, I eventually threw up all over myself. Just in time for my mom to walk in the door. My great aunt just looked at her and said "He got bit".

LOL...
I had no idea the ugly litter buggers bit. They look nasty or maybe just odd... sort of like a cross between a cricket, a wasp, and a spider. Never thought they could bite. I even picked one up once while chasing it around my basement. Thanks for the tale. That last quote made milk come out of my nose. (and I'm not even drinking milk!)
