Witnesses say that a 25-year-old man who was shot by police Saturday after becoming violent at a McDonald's had demanded "curly fries" in the fast-food restaurant - and reacted badly when they weren't available, according to residents living near the restaurant.
"I heard he really went nuts in there," said John Perry, who was sitting outside the Esquimalt McDonald's yesterday afternoon.
The man is recovering in hospital, where he underwent surgery for a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.
He is expected to recover.
The officer who fired the shot is on administrative leave while the matter is investigated by an outside police force.
He is a four-year veteran of the force.
Staff at the McDonald's restaurant called police early Saturday evening when a man outside the restaurant began punching the windows, said deputy chief Bill Naughton.
The man then began punching and kicking vehicles in the parking lot.
When two police officers tried to arrest the man, he resisted "and all three went to the ground," said Naughton.
At least one of the officers had his gun drawn. The male was unarmed.
"During the struggle on the ground, one of the officers' weapons discharged, striking the man in the abdomen," he said.
Naughton said it was "way, way too early" to characterize the shooting as accidental, though he acknowledged the officer involved made a statement to that effect at the scene.
I had no idea McDonald's had curly fries....
McDonald's is now selling curly fries? Who do I have to assault to get me an order of those bad boys?

To my knowledge, no McDonald's in the US serve curly fries; only Canada and a few countries in Europe.
A friend in Russia tells me that you can buy some kind of herring salad at McDonalds in Moscow.

I might actually go to a McDonald's again just to try that out.
I had to be restrained and tazered by two cashiers, an assistant manager, and an off-duty cop when I was informed they wouldn't be selling the McRib anymore this year.
Mayor McCheese is still in hiding in New Orleans trying to figure out where his buses are.
