Then I'd suggest you don't Google "shooting your wad"! You may find out who is the one without a clue. The phrase may have had heroic origins, but it was long ago drafted into an entirely different lexicon.
" Then I'd suggest you don't Google "shooting your wad"! "
Just because it's been co-opted by some people for different purposes doesn't mean it's a dirty phrase to use if it's not intended that way.
It's pretty simple. If satellite offers your local network stations, then you can get network. If you live X miles from a network tower, then satellite can give you network stations. The problems arises when the satellite provider doesn't carry the local affiliates and you're not far enough away to claim an exemption. If the local affiliates challenge, satellite can't legally provide network stations that would compete with your local affiliates.
Nonsense. The phrase is used in Tom Sawyer. It's American slang that dates back to at least 1850.
As usual, the objection combines prudery, dirty-midedness, and ignorance.
Precisely, although you left out a desire to sanitize the world, dressed up in the guise of doing it "for the children."
But this is the story of language. A vulgar term in one era becomes acceptable in another, and vice-versa. Language is intended to communicate ideas, and that it does, whether we like it or not. Using "shooting your wad" in 2005 and expecting it to provoke images of muskets and black powder is as naive as using "gay" and expecting it to provoke images of happiness and joy.
hmm...well, they said that we couldn't get it so I guess we fall under option B.
If you live X miles from a network tower, then satellite can give you network stations. The problems arises when the satellite provider doesn't carry the local affiliates and you're not far enough away to claim an exemption.
So, I guess we're not far enough away from a network tower for us to get it. We must fall under this option.
If the local affiliates challenge, satellite can't legally provide network stations that would compete with your local affiliates.
I guess they must have challenged.
Have I got it figured out?
Yep, looks like you got it.
Offense, like beauty, is in the eye (or mind) of the beholder...
thanks
You apparantly have not paid any attention to the "context" ~ you should do that every now and then.
"You apparantly have not paid much attention to context-you should do that every now and then."
Awww, that's no damn fun, ;o)
