9-11 and the Presidents response to it are responsible for the downfall of the democratic party in the elections since. The left is desperate not to let Bush have another 9-11. Very believable theory

My feelings exactly. I think the democrats felt that Bush would be an inept, one term President whom they could brush off as a court appointed President and easily defeat in 2004. Then 9/11 happened and everything changed. They lost seats in both houses in the 2002 elections, and even more in 2004.
