Seeking Shotgun Recommendation (Vanity)
Vanity ^ | September 6, 2005 | Self

Posted on 09/06/2005 2:53:37 PM PDT by pogo101

After seeing how society crumbled in New Orleans recently, I realized that I need a basic home-defense firearm, and I'm pretty well decided on a shotgun. I'd like you FReepers' recommendations on a model. (Don't worry, I'm already resolved that the first place it'll go is to a 10-hour safety class with me. Got a well-reputed teaching facility all picked out.)

If it matters, I live in greater LA.

I'm about as macho and gun-totin' a guy as Captain Kangaroo, but these last seveal days have brought home to me that it is my RESPONSIBILITY as the head of a household to be able to protect my home and family in times of dire crisis, where the law is unavailable.

I hope I never need to use it, but I need to be ready: After the holidays, I'm adding a shotgun to my emergency kit.

I outfitted my sisters and wife with 20 gauge Winchester Defenders, 18 inch barrel. It'll get the job done without busting their wings and the price is right.

Great thread. Thanks for starting it. I see im not the only one thinking of getting a shotgun these days. Having had the Remington 870 before and liked it, I intend to get another one soon.

I have a semi 22 Browning pistol 6.5" with a black finish. I love this gun and have practiced a lot with it. It has never jammed, its fun to shoot and ammo is cheap. 22s arent known for their power but I can place 10 HPs on target in a few seconds, and can reclip in short order. heheh

I look forward to having both a shotgun and handgun. The pistol would then be a backup.

I'd like this mod if I could get my hands on one.

Man, you have loads of common sense. Good shooting!

...load buckshot if you don't care to blow holes through your walls.

I own a house that was built in World War II for the Manhattan Project here in Oak Ridge. It's cast concrete slabs and cinderblock. I'm more concerned about the shot splattering and ricocheting around the room than I am about putting holes in the walls.

Thanks bud. :)

Hopefully I will never be forced to use it on another person. Cans or targets are much more fun and they stand still.

Im tempted to look at the Mossberg while im purchasing the Rem 870, so many here like it too.

Sane folks aren't trying to break into your house.

No one prefers to shoot first, but once they're in the door all civil niceties are off.

They've demonstrated a lack of concern.

No one prefers to shoot first,

No sane person would. What would you prefer to do first that wouldn't fall under "spooking a good target"?

Hopefully I will never be forced to use it on another person.

The second to last thing I ever want to happen is having to shoot some stupid thug for attempting violence against me or those I care about.

The absolute last thing I ever want to happen is not being able to shoot some stuupd thug for attempting violence against me or those I care about.

Unless I am greatly mistaken, the vast majority of gun owners have the exact same priorities, and this is something the gun grabbing nitwits never seem to understand.

Having a gun you don't need is infinitely better than needing a gun you don't have.

Start with light target loads (skeet/trap) and work up to light field loads (grouse/pheasant) then on to duck loads and then to buckshot loads. Happy shotgunning!

Shotgun blasts inside the house tend to be messy and usually damage the furniture in addition to the target. Go get yourself a Springfield, or if you have the money and want to show off, get yourself a Kimber.

I agree, with the exception that I'm a Sig-Sauer man myself.

"Having a gun you don't need is infinitely better than needing a gun you don't have."

What a timely quote in light of Katrina.
If people dont get it now they are incapable.

I can't claim credit for it. It's a favorite saying of a friend of mine when he comes across gun grabbers or those brainwashed by them. I wish I were as pithy; I usually just get flustered.
