Was anyone watching CNBC Morning Call today when Ted David asked the California Attorney General, and I paraphrase: "Is the money being spent on the War in Iraq jeopardizing the safety of Californians, because the government should be spending it to shore up "below sea level" areas of Northern California. Even the California Attorney General looked momentarily taken aback by another golden opportunity to bad mouth W.

"the below sea level" areas of Northern California?
The only areas of CA that I know of that are below sea level is Death Valley, some 200 miles from any source of water that might cause flooding.

My atlas says that at its lowest point CA [Death Valley] is (282 ft.) below sea level. That is a lot of fill, even if you use all the BS being put out by the Media.

What about Death Valley? Seems like an accident waiting to happen.

Much of Imperial Valley is below sea level. (The Salton Sea was created by accident about a century ago when a canal diverting water from the Colorado River to the Imperial Valley failed spectacularly, inundating much of the irrigated area before the water stopped flowing.)
The IV is about 50,000 years overdue for a massive earthquake--if the ground rupture extends into the Gulf of California (aka the Sea of Cortez), then most of the valley (including El Centro and Brawley) will be inundated.

Indeed. I lived in Yuba City when I was a kid - the place is crawling with levees. When I was in school in the early 80's the nearby city of Linda was completely submerged after massive flooding, and some levee failures. The Catholic school I went to also was completely under water at least once, many years before I enrolled.

Sacramento is above sea level, but it is below the level of the American River here and there.
BTW, Stockton (in the Central Valley) is an ocean port.

No one remembers the El Nino rains of 1996?
of course, all those farms that flooded back then are now subdivisions, and the levees are at risk...

I need a fence in my back yard. If we were not in Iraq the Feds would likely be there as we speak installing it.
