Good morning, all you FReeper baseball fans. Trust everyone is having a pleasant Labor Day weekend. To those of you impacted by Katrina, our thoughts and prayers go out to you. But baseball is the ultimate escape, so let us turn our thoughts to the last month of the season, and the week that was..
Pods are 5-1 against the Braves this year..
The great thing about this TV thingamagig is companies called Cable Companies run a tiny wire into your house which allows you to receive a signal which is converted into a picture on your, hope I spell this right, TV.
Wow. And here I sit without those Cable wire things. Wonder if I oughta throw away that dish on the roof and get some of those wire things. Is the picture better?
Wonder if I would have to pay extra just to get to see the Cards games? Maybe I better check into that. Wonder if they had that back in the 50's when I was listening to them on the radio. Nobody told Dad and Mom about that cable thingy. I might have missed a lot there.
Well it's been fun, but I've got some things to do before the Cards Flubs game comes through the air to the dish thing on my roof. Maybe the wires are invisible.
Having just returned from making my annual contribution to the SPA nags, I'm glad to see you changing your tactics...it will be less painful this way. :-)
Schilling has improved every start, and his line is looking more and more rational. (Theo claims it'll take 5 starts to really see where he is, and he's got some good offenses to face, so that may be spot on.) Add in Foulke pitching 1 2/3 practically perfect innings and you've got two positive signs for the next 26 games and the playoffs.

Of course it would've been nice to score SOMETHING off McCarthy and actually win the game.
You are, it would seem, supremely confident in the Cards. Do you have any doubt that they'll win the World Series? Which AL squad would be most troublesome to St. Louis, in your view?
I will officially wave the white flag during the upcoming 4 game series..
I trust you're planning some suitable graphics for the clinching, and for each subsequent playoff round victory..
I have Schill as not much of a help to us. Today's appearance wasn't a lot different from his other outings (pitches/inning, hits, runs, etc.). Foulke looked wonderful. The issue is that Foulke looked like that in every out of reach game this year before he was DLed. I can't draw too many conclusions because of that, but I am very hopeful.

I am extremely confident that the Cards will win the division. Past that I am hopeful. I've learned over the years that the best team doesn't always make it to the big game, and the best team in the series doesn't always win (Marlins- Yankees as an example).
As to which team would give the most problems, I haven't progressed to that point yet, as the AL is pure speculation at the moment and injuries can change things at the drop of a hat. I would like to play either the Sox or Yankees in the series for some obvious reasons. I actually didn't want to play the Sox last year as they were on a mission and that can be hard to overcome.
I really would rather play the Stros in the first round, because the Cards own them this year, or the Mets because of the old 80's rivalry. The Marlins scare me with a short series and their pitching. The Pods have a winning record against the Cards this year.
What I am is a lifelong Cards fan. I listened to the first game broadcast by KMOX in the 50's with my Dad. I have been to numerous playoff and series games. I don't dis other teams, just cheer my Cards. I will however, respond if jabbed.
I normally don't pay any attention to the senior circuit until September, and I was looking for an insight into all the hubbub in St. Louis. Thanks.

The search is on. I have some stuff I have found, but am still looking.
We'll see. If he regains 80% effectiveness this year he'll be .... well, pretty much like the starters we already have. But if he gets to 80, I figure he can bust out a big game with the season or the Series on the line.
"The cards are the best team in baseball"
Until they get swept in the WS, sure I'll go with that.
BTW..little know factoid..the Cards are the ONLY team in MLBB that has played the Yankees more than ONCE in a WS, and has a winning record over the Yankees...Cards are 3-2 against the Bronx Bombers..
Two words: Pedro Martinez
With Pedro and Maddux and Clemens (the not-as-fat years), we've certainly had our share of greats the last twenty years.
Interestingly, it looks like Miller will be back by the end of the month. I wonder how that will work out. He has a great strikeout rate and starts slow, but finishes well. Only Mantei is lost for the year.

Yeah I knew that but didn't want to bring it up in the earlier flamefest.
Gibby is the reason the mound is as low as it is today and they effectively changed the strike zone because of him.
That was an era of pitcher. Lolich, Gibby, Kofax, Drysdale, they were amazing.
And this waaaay before the AL defection to the DH (pfffft), those guys were expected to actually bat and field their positions. There were many games when Gibby was done on the mound and played the outfield, and not in the Little League switch, he was a great athlete. Another little known fact, Gibby actually played for the Globetrotters.
