after a mod got involved on behalf of some pretty contentious pests and made me call him or her a thumbsucker.

Whatever happened to personal responsibility? He "made me" do it?

I agree, he did irritate the mod. Not sure it warranted a total ban though. Maybe a suspension for a week or so to show him who is boss? I don't know I bet being a mod here has to be a tough job. I just brought this up, because i remember him asking for assistance a couple days ago after a heated exchange.
