(Vanity) News on Pass Christian, Mississippi?
September 4, 2005

Posted on 09/04/2005 5:00:37 PM PDT by akustikplayer

The news coverage has explained that Pass Christian MS is completely gone. Does anyone know if Menge was also ruined as well? I am trying to find out if "Gospel Singers of America is still standing. It faced the beach but was situated on Menge much higher than anything else. Please let me know if you hear anything, thanks.

Try here (they have damage maps):

FEMA Mapping and Analysis Center

The Mapping and Analysis Center (MAC) provides national level Geographic Information System (GIS) support and coordination to the Agency.

You probably know that you can go to

http://maps.google.com/

Type in Pass Christian MS OR if you know the street address, type that in.

And you can zoom in, and then toggle between the map and satellite photos -- to find your target -- from photos BEFORE Katrina.

That will help you compare the landmarks with the AFTER photos.

Hope this helps.

Pass Christian is not "completely gone". Many of the buildings within a few hundred yards of the beach got leveled by the storm surge, but the satellite pictures show that a good part of the buildings further inland are still standing - though their interior conditions may not be very good.

I think this is a photo of the damage to the structures at the intersectin of E. Scenic Drive and Menge Ave. in Pass Christian MS.

It doesn't look good for any structure to be standing this close to the beach.

I am so sorry.

Here is an aerial photo of the site. Locations are identified. Note: the news is just from looking from above - since this isn't a steel framed structure, there is likely interior left, but probably not a whole lot of it. The Cessna survey of the area shows surge debris well beyond the railroad tracks.

This school is going to need some serious help.

Here is their website, use the forum link to reach the message board where updates are being posted.

Here is the message on their bulletin board, saying that the school has been destroyed:

If you read the other posts on the board, you'll see that the message was premature. It 'bumps' up to the top any message replied to. They have assessed the school from the shots above and thinking that the damage is significant, but not debilitating.

Actually I spent the past week riding my motorcycle around and locating and treating alot of the animals there. All of Pass Christian is not gone. The buildings near the beach are gone, and farther down they are completely turned to rubble. The houses at the beginning 6+1of 2nd are still there, and some are well intact although that is only the brick one`s`.And there are a few really large houses which are still standing in a few places. But all of them have fallen ceilings and tons of debris inside. And I do think I remember seeing the Gospel Singers of America sign infront of an intact building and thinking how interesting.
