Today's NPR's Talk of the Nation hosted a call-in program for people affected by Hurricane Katrina. A woman who evacuated safely called to ask if anyone could assist her with getting hay and water to the carriage mules left behind in the evacuation. The caller said she was a carriage driver in the French Quarter and she was very concerned for the mules. She said three people stayed with the mules during the hurricane. They are stabled near the French Quarter. The woman thinks their supply of food and water must be gone by now. The NPR commentator responded that people are desperate for those things too so mules wouldn't be a priority for rescue.
Is there any way to get notice of these mules to any of the animal rescue groups in the area? I'm concerned for them too.
Maybe the mayor could handle that. Ass to ass rescue.

....
If they could get those six dolphins and seal lions out they can some how manage to get those mules out. You need to contact one of the animal rescue outfits working the Katrina disaster.
According to the woman who bred my dogs, kennel clubs and horsemen have already begun private animal relief efforts.
Whether they're specifically going in for the mules, I can't say.
Somebody north of me has already gone down to rescue a farm full of miniature horses.
The Audobon Zoo survived with minimal damage and animal loss. Maybe they could contact them for assistance.

Possible helpful links above.
I believe Al Gore stated he had plenty of experience with Mules, dating back to when he plowed the steep hillsides in Tennessee. Perhaps he could volunteer his services.

There is some bad news about the Aquarium, but good news about the zoo.
Some Fish Die At Aquarium

While there were plenty of fires still smoldering in New Orleans on Sunday, the black smoke belching from the roof of one of the citys crown jewels has regrettably stopped. The generator at the Aquarium of the Americas is shot.
Its demise signaled the death of scores of gorgeous animals according to stricken workers who moved through the building with miners lights strapped to their heads.
These were our buddies. We did the best job we could to keep them alive, said John Hewitt IV, director of husbandry and a senior vice president at the Audubon Nature Institute.
Near tears Hewitt declined to describe the watery tombs inside the aquarium. Most of the fish in the giant shark tank and the Caribbean reef exhibit are feared dead, as well as the tropical sting rays and other Amazonian fish in the aquariums rainforest section.
A similar tragedy reportedly has not befallen the New Orleans Zoo, another prime tourist attraction and a source of tremendous civic pride.
And all is not lost at the zoos watery partner at the foot of Canal Street. Hewitt identified the aquariums thick green anaconda and white alligators as among the survivors.
Theyre fine and frankly were in no hurry to move those guys, Hewitt said.
Also making it through Hurricane Katrina were the aquariums sea otters, its bald eagle and most of its penguins. Hewitt said in the coming days the aquariums staff will try to find alternative homes for the fish and birds.
No decision has been made on a timetable for that move or on whether to drain the tanks before the dead fish are removed.
Weve had offers of help from all over the world, he said. What well do now is access the health of the living animals and get them relocated wherever we can.
It appears that these mules have survived.
When I first read this, I thought it had something to do with drugs.
