Linux thrives in left-leaning Kerala
NewsForge ^ | August 26, 2005 | Sreelakshmi Haridas

Kerala, a tiny coastal state in south India, is a site of significant popularity of free software and GNU/Linux. What lessons can Kerala teach other areas about using free and open source software?

Kerala, as a state, is strongly grounded in principles of socialism. Most of the educated middle class is leftist, at least in principle. The state is credited with a near 100% literacy rate and better social statistics than most of the rest of the country. And all this is reflected in a spirit among the people to question any decision imposed on them. They resent lack of choices, and by extension, oppose monopolies. What better fuel for an open source/free software movement to thrive on than a society like this?

And what concern is it to you or anyone else not living these countries?

Obviously, when they use these freeware products instead of buying our for-sale products, they get something from us for nothing. And I don't condone subsidizing communist governments, for any reason, ever.

And you worry about something as ineffectual as the DNC?

Absolutely, they are a dangerous group that continues to hold a significant amount of public offices in this country, and unfortunately will continue to win elections despite their danger. To ignore them and their goals is to lose sight of the difference between right and wrong. Sounds like you've been confused for some time, especially with a handle like that.

Do you have any bill #'s? The only thing I know of in this are, in the USA at least, are proposals that would require the government to use only fully docummented file formats.

Why don't you just do us all a favor, and move to Kerala?

I have a better idea. You move to Communist China. They love Microsoft as much as you, are as tolerant of reality as you, and have about as much love of ideological diversity as you. It'd be a perfect fit!

It would appear that your understanding of the Mono License is less than complete. Perhaps Microsoft should not have submited C# and portions of .Net to the EMCA.

What license or licenses are you using for the Mono Project?

We use three open source licenses:

* The C# Compiler and tools are released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (http://www.opensource.org/licenses/gpl-license.html) (GPL).

* The runtime libraries are under the GNU Library GPL 2.0 (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/library.html#TOC1) (LGPL 2.0).

* The class libraries are released under the terms of the MIT X11 (http://www.opensource.org/licenses/mit-license.html) license.

Both the Mono runtime and the Mono C# Compiler are also available under a proprietary license for those who can not use the LGPL and the GPL in their code.

For licensing details, contact mono-licensing@novell.com

For starters, they are not going to ever buy our for sale products. Pirate them perhaps but not buy. We've lost *nothing* there. If this country, en masse, were to walk away from OSS nothing would change. It's a world-wide thing and it *will* continue to grow. Governments are going to adopt it. Matters not what political leanings they have.

they are a dangerous group that continues to hold a significant amount of public offices in this country

And they are slowly beginning to lose them. They courted the lunatic fringe and veered too far to the left. Way too far. If you fear a resurgence, look no farther than a red state/blue state map and the state of the mainstream media.

Sounds like you've been confused for some time, especially with a handle like that.

Not at all. Turning my back on the party was a fairly straightforward decision and quite an easy one to make. All I had to do was see how "Real Democrats" like Zell Miller were being marginalized in favor of buffoons like the Clintons. I wish people would cease calling it the Democratic Party as it no longer is such. It's simply a mish-mash of Socialists and the useful idiots who support them.

Actually I think many governments are fearful of MS products because they might have back-doors built into them. The more paranoid the government (Chavez is a good example) the more they want open source where they can look at the code an know what it's up to.

a near term suspicion i assure you.

once bill gates can convince chavez that he is more interested in making money in venezuela than helping GWB spy on venezuelan government agencies, and can show how the tracking software can help chavez control things, then chavez will select M$ at least for the venezuelan home user.

in a police state, the last thing the government would want is for dissidents to run spyware-free linux...

Thankfully I think they were all watered down to only require open source be considered, or open formats used, but the original proposals required the use of open source software. Here's a few examples from liberal bastions such as New York, California, and Massachusetts.

Hogwash, it's available under GPL which could and will be used by most if not all that use it. Bottom line is it's a cheap clone of a commercial product that's given away as an attempt to hurt the original manufacturer, in this case Microsoft, just as Linux has severly damaged UNIX vendors like SCO and Sun who used to dominate the *nix market.

Which is why Microsoft now allows many governments to inspect their source code through their "shared source" program, as a response to open source. I don't agree with them doing it, but it's no longer an excuse you can use in defense of the Chicoms.

Then they don't deserve crap from us. Especially not our welfare in the form of software subsidies.

Matters not what political leanings they have.

Ridiculous.

If you fear a resurgence, look no farther than a red state/blue state map and the state of the mainstream media.

MSM is and always will be leftist. If you think you somehow scored a point claiming otherwise, think again.

I wish people would cease calling it the Democratic Party as it no longer is such. It's simply a mish-mash of Socialists and the useful idiots who support them.

You are actually right about the 'useful idiots', who support them and their goals. Obviously, this is just another example of that.

Here's a bill # in Alabama. Looks like it's one of the newer ones where they are only forcing the review of open source, although that's still not a fair or needed policy.

I cannot believe what I am reading here.

Then they don't deserve crap from us. Especially not our welfare in the form of software subsidies.

Not sure if this is arrogance or Xenophobia at work here. Either way, it indicates a bit of ignorance on your part. They do not *need* our involvement. A sizable chunk of the "crap" isn't written by "us" to begin with. You've not once looked at a ChangeLog, have you?

MSM is and always will be leftist....

No sh*t?? Do tell!

If you think you somehow scored a point claiming otherwise, think again.

Reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, is it?

Obviously, this is just another example of that.

The only thing obvious here is that you're either a troll or a fool. Probably both. You come across as if you were that kid who sat at the back of the bus and chewed on the seat in front of him. At any rate, you add absolutely nothing to a discussion.

Don't like M$, use a bonifide version of UNIX instead. What's your excuse now, can't afford it? It's only downloadable from Sun for free.

I sit here and laugh at you!! Have you ever looked a Communist in the face?

I have. I spent my time serving this country. I walked the streets of East Berlin during the middle of the Cold war.

I have stood on Karl Marx Street in East Berlin, I have looked Uniformed Russians Officers in the eye.

You don't know the first thing about Communism, so why don't you just shut-up for a while!!!!

LMAO! Ducking a debate by resorting to name-calling certainly doesn't seem to affect you either.

Thus ends my ever taking you seriously again :)
