The 1985 Chicago Bears made an impact on the NFL and the world overall like no other pro football team had before, or has since. This is well documented and celebrated. ESPN even selected this team as the best single team in the history of the league.

This fall will mark the 20th anniversary of that great group of players and coaches. This year the team has incorporated to "provide economic opportunities" for its players during the celebration. Undoubtedly the Bears organization and its paid professional web developers will create some snazzy content on their site for the anniversary.

The fact remains that fortunately, if one searches for "1985 Chicago Bears" on most search engines, the first hit will be this here site, I'm proud to say. So to give thanks to my loyal visitors, I have created additional content on the '85 page. This includes news & notes from the season, profiles on the starters, and links to full rosters and stats. I'm sure the '85 salary page will open many an eye as well.

1. 1985 Bears It was, undeniably, cocky for the Bears to record the "Super Bowl Shuffle" video before the playoffs even started, but, to paraphrase an old saying, it ain't cocky if you can back it up. The 1985 Bears were QBed by the punky, and effective, Jim McMahon. The running attack? Sweetness and, at times, the Fridge. Defense? Impenetrable. The Bears finished the regular season with a 15-1 record, scoring 456 points while allowing only 198. And they blew through the playoffs, shutting out the Giants 21-0 and then the Rams 24-0 for the NFC title. After the Bears demolished the Pats 46-10 in the Super Bowl, Patriots guard Ron Wooten said, "Before the end, it kind of felt like we were the team that the Globetrotters play all the time."
Greatest NFL teams of all time

Well, the Bears did say that the weather during the game was "unusually hot and humid," which attributed to their loss. :-)

Lucky plays...yeah. The Orange Bowl rocked from the kickoff to the final whistle. It was an amazing night. I almost wished I was watching at home, just to see the replays and hear the commentary.

Ironically, it was after that Dolphin loss is when the Bears made the "Super Bowl Shuffle."

And what of certain 49ers...Packers....Cowboys....Steelers...or Patriots teams?

Just sad Walter Payton isn't here to celebrate. He was the best of the best.

Yep, Walter is a true champion.

The best in NFL history? I don't get it. Of course ESPN is hardly an authority.

Wow. They sure are ate up with themselves - eh? The following list includes Chicago - ONCE. The Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay, San Diego, Cincinnati and Baltimore Ravens also join that group. Best EVER? No way. Hell, I'm a Dallas fan and would put Da Bears in at least fourth - behind some of the San Fransisco, New England and Dallas teams.

All I could find was a DUI in Nov. '03 - aka '15 beers in 18 holes' - blew a .261 - quote to the police when pulled over "I'm too drunk, you got me."

per AP story:

MILTON, Fla. - Former NFL quarterback Jim McMahon has been placed on probation for 12 months after pleading no contest to a drunken driving charge.

McMahon, 44, who led the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl win in 1986, was also ordered to perform 50 hours of community service and pay about $850 in fines and costs, Assistant State Attorney Andy McGraw said Wednesday. McMahon’s driver’s license was suspended for six months.

McMahon was pulled over in November after police received two calls about a pickup that was recklessly going through traffic and nearly causing accidents. McMahon failed a field sobriety test and had a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit in Florida, police said.

I was at the Bear/Ram playoff game courtesy of Keith Ortego, rookie wide receiver for the Bears and saw the greates stop of all time.

Dickerson was at full speed heading up the middle of the line and Singletary not only stopped him cold but knocked him back. Unbelievable.

Then the snows came, our beers froze and all was righ with the world.

In 1986 the Niners recorded their own ripoff of the "Superbowl Shuffle."

I found a copy of the .mp3 recently.

It's so bad, it's almost good.

....Steelers

Oh, yeah. Them too. That may put Da Bears maybe sixth or seventh - behind some of the early Packer teams. Come to think about it, they may not have been able to stop the Namath Jets...

The only blemish to that great season was the Miami game. My wife, (a huge Miami fan), reminds me of that fact anytime we discuss the 85 Bears season. I took her to her first NFL game Nov 24, 1991 Miami at Bears. Bears lost in overtime! Tough drive home!

You two are right on!!! No one has been able to match the '72 Dolphins...NOT ONE LOSS...the '85 Bears ONE LOSS, AND THAT WAS TO THE DOLPHINS!!!. Damn, I loved watching that game!!

Now, for the '85 Bears...they totally lost all respect in my eyes by the end of the Super Bowl game. That last touchdown, instead of giving the ball to Peyton, who was the best ever, they give the ball to that fat piece of lard "the fridge". Peyton should have been given the ball...that's the only thing he didn't get to do, score a TD in a Super Bowl...and he was a lot of the reason they made it there in the first place.
