Have you done a spyware scan? A lot of malware changes your home page and installs controls which habitually crash. Odds are, you're 0wn3d by hax0rz.
Thanks for the thought...just tried running Ad Aware and SpyBot... no effect. IE still doesn't load.

1. Are your spyware definitions up to date? (ie. did you download the latest defs?)
2. Have you tried running the IE executable directly?
