Gretchen Wilson Pressed on Smokeless Tobacco

The state attorney general wants the country singer who made the song "Redneck Woman" a hit to stop "glamorizing" the use of chewing tobacco at her concerts. State officials said Gretchen Wilson can be seen on concert jumbo screens pulling a can of Skoal from her pocket while performing her new song, "Skoal Ring." That may violate the 1998 settlement between states and tobacco companies forbidding tobacco ads targeting young people, Attorney General Paul Summers said.

"Many young people attend your concerts and purchase your music and T- shirts," Summers wrote in a letter he sent to Wilson Thursday. "Because your actions strongly influence the youth in your audience ... I ask you to take steps to warn young people of negative health effects of smokeless tobacco use."

Calls to Wilson's representatives at her music label Sony Music Nashville were not immediately returned Thursday.

Wilson won wide acclaim and a Grammy with her debut single "Redneck Woman."

The title of her song "Skoal Ring" refers to the wear mark left by carrying a can of chewing tobacco in a pocket of blue jeans. In the final verse of the song, Wilson sings that she gets turned on by the taste of smokeless tobacco on her man's lips.

The landmark $206 billion tobacco settlement "provided that advertisements such as this would be and should be prohibited," Summers said.

Our attorney general has too much time on his hands.
Guess he has cleaned up this state of all crime...meths,
crooked politcians(caught with hands in the cookie jar),
just to name a few...

Gretchen is a great singer...you go girl!!!

She just pulls out the can, she doesn't actually use it. Read it again.

It doesn't say that she doesn't use it. Is that the deal though? Just a prop?

I think so. I'd hate to see someone who sings as hard as gretchen Wilson does try to do it with an ever-growing blob of Skoal saliva in her mouth....

Is she sponsored by Skoal? If not, isn't this considered "free speech"?

I guess if you put it that way it doesn't matter. The outcome remains the same, eh?

Talk about abuse of powers regarding the MSA.

The longer I live in this damn country the more I come to realize that our so called freedoms are nothing but that. A lifetime friend of mine met a Russian gal via the internet and ultimately brought her here 2 years ago. She has since learned English and is pursuing a college degree. She says that the most noteworthy aspects of this country is our overwhelming abuse of the legal system inasmuch as it has become almost impossible to do anything without violating the law.

My friend has gone thru some major legal problems and she has been at his side all the way. And she is now absolutely terrified of our legal system........

It might not matter one way or another, not ALL tobacco companies are party to the settlement - which was against cigarette manufacturers, not manufacturers of other tobacco products.

It's art, well, it falls in the arts category. The left are nothing more than tiny little wannabe dictators. Fascists, every single one on the left is.

If a Russian is terrified of our legal system, that's really saying something.
