Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

I don't think I've noticed the apostrophe one, but it's going to get me when I do.
My daughter and I noticed a particularly annoying use of punctuation that seems to be sweeping America: the use of quotation marks to emphasize truth, when they really imply skepticism.
For instance, we saw some product labeled "genuine" whatever it was, with the word genuine in quotations! To us, that implied the stuff was fake, but apparently the vendors thought the opposite.

the use of quotation marks to emphasize truth, when they really imply skepticism.I would find that annoying too, not to mention confusing.
The apostrophe-s mistake happens with common nouns... for instance, instead of typing "the dogs" when they mean more than one dog, the person will type "the dog's"... which always makes me want to ask, "The dog's what?" since apostrophe-s is the possessive form...

"OK, a car that flies. Now I've seen everything."
"Really. Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?"
"No!"
"All right, then you ~haven't~ seen everything."
Good night.

That's from a commercial Avery Brooks did for IBM. It's a great rant, and that's only a partial audio clip of the whole thing. It's the only wav file I could find of it...
Avery Brooks was the station commander in the series "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". The commercial came out while he was still appearing on the show.
