An especially sinister side of our reflexive readiness to endorse claims by supposed victims is that it empowers psychopaths. Many of them not only use sympathy to attract victims, but they get a thrill from the success of deception. Think of Ted Bundy with his arm in a sling.

Not listed is a related type of hoax: one not perpetrated by the victim but by the homosexual lobby. The best example is the Matthew Shepard episode. There is reason to believe it was actually a meth crime.

There are gay website rebuttals to these revelations which apparently first came out on ABC's 20/20 in 2004. So make up your own mind.

I considered the sources on both sides and the strategic history of the gay rights movement. I take the cynical view.

Anyway the hoaxer list provided here is disturbing enough. Media manipulation has reached the level of scientific discipline.

IIRC, one big case that put Al Sharpton into the spotlight was the Twana Brawly case where this 15 year old Black girl in 1978 was attacked by a gang of White boys, had dog crap smeared all over her and I think she was tossed in a dumpster, not sure on the last one. It was later proven to be a hoax yet Sharpton is still big on the national scene. I remember watching Sharpton on Morton Downey Jr. harping about it all the time.
