SAN DIEGO Police were searching downtown near Interstate 5 on Monday morning for a woman who ran away after her car hurtled off southbound Interstate 5 and crashed into a gas station on First Avenue. According to reports called in to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle was seen traveling at speeds up to 100 miles per hour before leaving the freeway shortly before 7:30 a.m. and crashing into the station just north of state Route 163.
A woman was seen running from the car and San Diego police officers were searching a nearby hotel for her.
Police said they were unsure whether she fled the scene as a hit-and-run driver or because she feared an explosion and fire.
Firefighters were summoned but no fire or explosion occurred.
I guess she was done with it.
How any could attain 100 mph on a San Diego freeway at rush hour is the big question.
Sleeping at the wheel at 100 mph? Dangerous.
Fleeing from the site of an accident? Criminal.
Getting a room at the nearest Motel 6 and taking a nap? Priceless.
probably just saw the Dukes of HaZZard flick. ;-)
(steely)
Even if the car started braking down from 100mph, the crash itself probably was at sufficiently high speed. Even with airbags deployed, her body would be protected, but her feet wouldn't - and she is claimed to have run away. Something does not quite compute.
They have some overpass sections at the 5 and SR163..
This is in the Balboa Park area.
