Yes...and FYI.. the Yankees don't have to worry about the luxury tax either..construction on the new stadium starts soon, and because the MLBB rules allow whatever the Yankees pay towards a stadium to be offset against any luxury tax they owe..the problem the Yankees have is Steinbrenner..he wants to go out...to step back from day-to-day control..on top...his dream is to anounce his retirement at the next Yankee's championship parade up Broadway..You can expect that Cashman will walk away after this season..the Boss has treated him like crap..imagine having your press person announce to the media that the Boss has "ordered" Cashman to fly with the team to away games..Torree will keep his mouth shut this season, and after the Yankees fail to make the playoffs, the Boss will go off on Torre...Joe will let him have it with both barrels..do a Billy Martin..in effect dare Steinbrenner to fire him and eat the $14 mill he's owed...if he doesn't..next season, every time the Boss makes a comment..then Torre will just tell him publicly to be quiet..
No argument...Oswalt is a stud..I was referring to the bond between Sndy and Roger..it was Pettitte who convinced Clemens to come out of retirement..
None of the starters on the DL were starting pitchers, though. All the difference in the world. MLB is really a simple game - The best pitching wins.
That's true. I had forgotten about the two Texans becoming the best of friends in NY.
I remember seeing Pettite pitch in '94 or '95 for the first time and thinking, "That guy could be on a cover for an Italian Fashion magazine". A couple of years later, I about fell out of my chair hearing some one interview him and hearing that West Texas accent of his.
Speaking of collapses, how 'bout the 2004 Yankees? Ha ha ha......
Four games behind the ChiSox for best record in the AL? Yeah, those slackers need to stop sucking so bad!
Funny..if you listen to NY sports talk radio..Yankkee fans have completely blocked that collapse out..It's a non-event...it never happened....they all still focus on the loss to the DBacks in the WS..
So who does that make Joe Torre? Baron Harkonnen? Alia, under possession?
FWIW, Bernie says he's not planning to retire. I'm sure he could still be useful as a .......... ......... ........ .... .... ....... .....
I think he's saying that now, hoping that the Yankees will want him back..look..the guy played all his career here..he's a class act..never a whiff of a scandal..and he's loved by thge fans. He's chosen a low profile existence..never done any commercials..so does he need to go off for a year, with a bad team...for a few mill more..it doesn't make sense..he can't throw...everyone is running on him..and he doesn't have the speed he used to..the worse thing is that he doesn';t get any decent offers..it's an embarassing way to go out..
True enough but if they continue to play the way they have been their chances in the post season look grim.
Steady, Solid Rotation of
Wake (12-10, 4.29)
Wells (9-6, 4.70)
Arroyo (10-8, 4.18)
Clement (11-3, 4.38)
Schilling -- effectiveness TBD, but c'mon, as your 5th starter!
Bullpen of
Jeremi Gonzalez (2-1, 5.44) -- has really settled into his long relief role
Jon Papelbon (0-0, 2.25) -- DOMINATING in the early innings of his starts
Mike Myers (3-1, 3.45) -- good lefty specialist
Chad Bradford (2-0, 2.70) -- successful return from surgery
Mike Timlin (5-2, 1.73) -- excellent year for the veteran
the only real question is: Closer. Keith Foulke is coming back, and how successful will he be? Timlin assumes the role for now. Craig Hansen is coming to join Foulke in middle relief for now.
Well, I wonder about that, but my guess is he just likes playing baseball, and doesn't mind not being a star.
Yankees have a 4 game series with the Blue Jays, and it says here they lose 3 of 4, maybe get swept, since Moose is due for a bad outing.....and then they welcome the newly resurgent Royals for 3..Nothing less than a sweep is acceptable for the Yankees and it won't happen..so, by this time next week..Yankees could be out of it for all practical purposes..
My Yankees usually get hot in Sept. This year maybe not but we'll see...In the meantime, I hope the Big Unit only signed for a year or Steinbrenner and I will have to have a talk!
He can still swing a bat though and any AL team with a decent budget should take a flyer on him.
18-8 in the last 30 days? (12-6 in August.) True, it's just shy of the Indians' 19-8, but I don't think playing nearly .700 ball QUITE constitutes the portent of doom you seem to see.
Bernie Williams?
The guy who's having almost as good a year hitting (.709 OPS) as Kevin Millar (.715 OPS), plays almost as good defense, and is almost as fast? (2 SB, 6 CS in the last two years.) At least Millar's a streaky hitter who may bounce back. Bernie's game began collapsing three years ago.
They have very similar stats at this point in their careers but I would still take him on my team over Millar at this point.
Pitching is a very large part of it, but you have to play defense and score runs.
You can have the best pitching in the league and not win at 0-0.
Great pitchers have been screwed by lousy defense and poor run production (see Clemons this yr.).
I'm saying that it's a miracle that the Cards put together a team that overcame the loss of four starters for over 2 months.
Do that to any other team in the NL and they would have tanked. Instead the Cards have played over .700 with a makeshift team.
RJ signed through 2007 at about $20 mill per annum..sorry..
