My dad described driving as a matter of momentum management. Try not to waste momentum. The heat in your brakes = wasted gas.
Also, drive as if you had an egg between your foot and the gas pedal.
I could hook that thing up to a horse. hmmm.
If you carry a 'stranded in the winter' kit you might not need the extra gas.
Winter temperatures are commonly -30F (static air), with plenty of wind to boot, but I have seen wind chills as low as -146 F.
In a pinch I can use the fuel to make a fire (trees are few in most areas, so forget firewood).
In addition, I carry (in my older Van) a 30 day supply of food, a firearm and ammo, flashlights, tools, ample water, tow rope, shovel, spare parts, two spare tires, tire chains with extra tighteners, spare radiator hoses, antifreeze, tranny fluid, a change of oil, and enough winter gear to be able to camp out for a while.
But then, I am a wellsite geologist and get off the beaten path pretty frequently and have worked from the Canadian border to a few miles from Area 51.
It is not unusual for me to be out of cell phone range and 60 miles from the nearest payphone.
On one occasion in Wyoming, (coming out of the Red Desert in a blizzard) I pulled up to the gas pumps ar Muddy Gap with only two gallons in the tank. I always run on a full tank.
Fuel is cheap if I am alive to pay for it.
I burn about 600 gallons of gasoline in my work vehicle a year. Even at $3.00/gallon, the savings of running with a light fuel load are not that critical, at least compared to the potential for disaster by not running with a full tank.
Your situation may vary.
Sounds like you are well prepared for just about anything.
Pretty much have to be. It is part laziness, though. I got tired of removing the winter gear in the summer and vice versa, so I just haul it all now....
11. Use Mexican Overdrive on long downgrade stretches.
Of course that's going almost 1/3 further per hour for about 3 bucks of gas. For 300 miles worth of driving (totalling commute or a full haul) that's saving almost an hour and a half for 3 extra gallons of gas, if you make more than minimum wage then the value of your time saved is worth more than the extra gas burned.
Really I think people get way to hyper about gas. It's still pretty darn cheap, and when you sit down and work the math unless you're pretty poor the extra time and effort used to save gas is worth more than the gas saved.
Indeed I do. A/C season is about over, but it gave us one more week of 80+ just last week. We are getting back to normal for August--40 to 60 and drizzle.
I live on the Gulf Coast of Texas, hopefully it will stay under 100 for the rest of the month and into Sept. I could use a little 40-60 and drizzle. ;9)
Kramer might pull it for you too. Although, he might let go on a steep hill, and then well...ya know.
Uh, I think I stated average milage per gallon.
Computer readings were checked against 200 mile trips (by trip odometer) over the same highway and fill up's at pump, which proved the computer average milage per gallon was dead on.
