new NASCAR, where contracts aren't worth the paper they're written on.

Sadly it's about like the rest of the world.

Hi I want to know we've gotcha on the ping list now.

I started this on the News page, but maybe because it's a day early or that we do chat a lot prior to the race the Mod put us over here. I actually posted early because we've had atrocious weather and I wanted to be sure to get it done while there was no lightning. I mean I love Nascar but I don't want to die from a lightning strike while FReeping.

On second thought there could be worse fates.

From DW's column. It's very long since he's a wind bag. But I found the following paragraph the only part that says anything we might want to know.

"here are still some pretty big moves to be made among some pretty important stars. Two or three guys are waiting for the right time to have their own teams and not have to deal with the whims of owners."

Watkins Glen
by Cathy Varga- Guest Contributor
08/11/2005

The NASCAR Busch Series returns to The Glen this weekend after a four-year absence for the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International, a 2.45-mile road course with 11 turns in Watkins Glen, New York. It’s the second time the Busch teams will race at a road course in 2005, which is a series first. Race coverage begins Saturday at 2 pm.

The Busch series began competing at the Glen in 1991. Road course specialist Ron Fellows, who will pilot the No. 43 Bully Hill Vineyards Chevrolet in Saturday’s race, won three of the last four races here: 2001, 2000 and 1998. Among the field of 53 drivers entered in the 2005 event, Fellows joins a host other road course aces, including Scott Pruett, Boris Said, and Jorge Goeters, who won the pole at the other Busch Series road course race this year in Mexico City.

Other items to note heading into Saturday’s race:

- In addition to the road course “ringers,” there are a number of Nextel Cup regulars who are also entered into the race, including Brian Vickers, Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, Jeff Burton, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle, Travis Kvapil, Joe Nemecheck, Robby Gordon, Dale Jarrett, and Michael Waltrip.

Thanks for hosting this weeks thread.

Even though I managed to pick the winner for last week, the rest of my FFRL picks were crap. Unnngh.

Oh well, at least Tubebender & Glock haven't passed me yet. I usually do best when I'm on vacation and let my picks roll.

I am not a big fan of road couarse racing. I think they could spice it up a bit by making the track variable throughout the race. Some times there is a chicane, sometimes not. Sometimes there is a 180 degree turn, othertimes you have a short straight at that spot before the next turn.

I know, it will never happen, and it's a kind of like Saturday Night at a quarter-mile figure 8 track, but at least it would make the road racing less of a line-'em-up affair.

Doh! Busch’s Defection is All About Toyota
By Allison Wagda

I just figured it out. Toyota is going with Penske in '07. Or
maybe even next year.

That’s why Kurt Busch stabbed his car owner and
acknowledged mentor in the back. That has to be it.

Why else would any driver in their right mind, loyalty aside, toss away what is
arguably one of the best rides in all of NASCAR?

At Roush, he has the equipment. He has the support of his owner. He has Jimmy
Fenig (at least for now). He has a score of teammates who let him lead laps for
bonus points when they are faster. Even his sponsors, for some inexplicable reason,
seem to like him.

Enter Toyota, stage left.

Now, it isn’t that much of a revelation that Penske could be, and even likely would be,
one of the teams Toyota would use to launch itself into the NASCAR stratosphere.
Penske races Toyota in the IRL. But this latest news from Kurt Busch absolutely
confirms it, in my opinion.

It’s the only thing that makes sense. Toyota’s arrival is imminent, perhaps even in
2006 (remember, when Brian France spoke with the media in June, he refused to
say that Toyota couldn’t join in 2006 even if they missed the July 1st deadline).

Toyota’s corporate group is very savvy about the racing world – at least in the racing
world outside of American stock cars. And they know that champions sell products.
As with any sports sponsorship, sponsoring a champion usually adds cache to your
product. People usually like to root for winners. Although a Chase title doesn’t exactly
equate to a winning season or huge numbers of adoring fans…but I digress.

In NASCAR, there are few past champions to choose from. Tony Stewart? Firmly
ensconced at JGR and already probably has more money than money could buy.
Plus, he’s a guy who moved back to his childhood home recently. Not even just his
hometown mind you, but actually into his old modest home. That’s a man who is not
(at least these days) for sale.

Kenseth? Not a contender right now (emphasis on right now) mired back in 15th in
the standings, and is perhaps too staid for Toyota’s taste. Gordon? Unless
Childress can be bought into the Toyota camp, I don’t see Gordon driving a Celica or
whatever Toyota hopes to race. His business interests are too closely tied to RCR.

And the only person without a title who could make Toyota salivate would be Dale Jr,
and he’s not going to go to Penske. RCR maybe someday, but not Penske and not
Miller Lite. Not to say DEI won’t make the switch to Toyota but that’s another story for
another day.

There's more..BACKSEAT BLONDE
