Word For The Day,. Friday, August 5, 2005
August 5, 2005 | Argh

Posted on 08/05/2005 2:04:23 AM PDT by Argh

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of four "Words for the Day".

1. habromania

Noun: [from Greek words habros meaning graceful or delicate and mainesthai to be mad]:

a kind of insanity during which the delusions are of a cheerful character

2.quackle [onomatopoeic]

to choke or suffocate

3. uranism [YUR-en-ism: from the Greek Urania, another name for the Greek goddess of sex and love Aphrodite. This is what my 3-volume Webster’s says. I thought Urania was just the Muse of astronomy. Then there was the Titan Uranus who was the sky god and first ruler. He was the son of Gaea, who created him without help. He then became the husband of Gaea (why the complex is named after Oedipus, who at least didn't know he was marrying his mom, instead of Uranus, is beyond me, but I digress) and together they had many offspring, including twelve of the Titans. His rule ended when when Cronus, encouraged by Gaea, castrated him. He either died from the wound or withdrew from earth.]

a homosexual condition especially when involving physically normal males

4. Friday word:

souteneur [pronounced soo-ten-EUR, from French sustenir to support]

A type of pimp, a man who cohabits with a prostitute, lives off her earnings, and often solicits for her - also called cadet

Example sentence:
Souteneur: think Bill and President Hillary.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using one or more of the Words for the Day in one or more sentences.
The sentences must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Well you remember I can wear sandals all year here - so I just slip out of them in the car - I just don't feel as comfortable driving in shoes -

i am serious in saying my parents must have told me not to, and that is why i had never done it. i can see how you would have a better feel (literally) for the amount of pressure you are exerting on the gas pedal etc.i have pulled the car in the garage from the driveway in bare feet.

Tom Terrific is the husband of my sister in Minnesota. We're visiting them on this trip. We just talked on the phone for over an hour. LOL! She's the sister whose son has done three tours of duty in the ME as a Marine. Semper Fi. I've posted this before, but here's her son (if it's still there):

I would drive barefoot when I was in florida, but that was because I was either wearing flipflops or Dr. Scholl's and it was just easier to slip the danged thing off.........i was always under the impression it was illegal to drive barefoot just about everywhere else.

I just slip off my right shoe. I can't drive with shoes on either. That's why I wear sandals. If I wear high heels with a buckle strap, it takes me forever to buckle the strap because of my crappy hands.

We have a strip along one side of our house that is totally useless - it is about 4 feet wide, then the fence - it is a literal BOG from our sprinkler system and the one next door - nothing grows but weeds and I plan, eventually, to have it lined with the dark plastic and covered with stone - you can't even get the mower all the way because the air conditioner condensor is over there! What piss poor planning - I have to spectracide the weeds on that side of the house!

Gosh XS, you must be very relaxed from your vacation - I still think a 20% believability factor is way too generous

It's all in how you learned to drive - you grew up in a colder climate and had months of wearing warmer shoes/clothing -

the black plastic covered with rocks idea sounds great. my idea was to plant the flowers so densely that you coudln't see the weeds, that has worked by and large, except for the suckers that shot up to literally 3 feet high sticking up above the flowers

It is illegal to drive without shoes in most states. That's because the old fashioned gas pedal and clutch got hot and burned your tootsies. And then OOOPS, an accident happened. I think that law is on the books just for fun nowadays.

I most certainly do - I am a storyteller. And I very much take that as a point of pride.

Remember grandad's eulogy? "He tells a story once, and he likes it - he tells it twice, and he believes it."

The story is the thing. ;)
