We left Pensacola to come back to Southern California. We stopped at a rest area in Alabama. When the rain started, we got in the cars and kept driving west. The rain that we felt was the first bands of rain from hurricane Camille. At some times we were just a few hours ahead of her landfall. I remember we got the last tank of gas at one service station before he {the owner} closed up and headed out.
