Protection similar to what an internet service provider offers can be implemented by just about anyone with their own domain name, and access to their server. Domain names and web hosting have become so cheap that it is not all that uncommon for people to have their own website, or at least a domain name for e-mail. SPAM Assassin is a no-cost, server based spam fighting solution that can be installed on a server, and has become a common feature included on many web hosting packages. Using MailScanner along with spamassassin is an effective combination.

You know..one of the greatest successes of the federal government in the last 25 years has been the "DO NOT CALL" list. I can't rememebr the last time I had a telemarketer call the house, and we used to get inundated. The corollary, and greater problem, in addition to SPAM is of course the viruses and spyware tbat spread through your computer and can ruin it...<P.
So I thinkt hat the first person who announces that he's running for president promising that if elected he will end the SPAM and virus/spyware problem, will be elected in a landslide...It's be a simple, yet very effective campaign..."ELECT ME, AND I WILL FIX THESE THINGS. IF I DON'T, I WILL NOT RUN FOR A SECOND TERM"

August 01, 2005How sad. Judging from these great tips, few if any new ideas have surfaced since the late 20th Century.

Nobody mentioned the obvious way to make spam go away, although it takes a while--
Never, ever buy anything that's touted to you in an unsolicited email.
Period.

The obvious solution to spam is to address it at its source -- all mail servers, internationally, need to have bandwidth limits as well as very small limits on the number of cc: on a given message. Servers which fail to comply (IOW, those not in some kind of registry, analogous to a DNS) would be blocked by all other servers. Legit users would either pressure their provider, or dump 'em.
As to writers of software which extract email addresses, and sellers of email addresses -- I'm in favor of a more Islamic punishment for them, maybe severing their hands, or execution.
