The Red Sox just announced that the next time Manny Ramirez doesn't run out a fly ball, they will make him a "recess appointment" to the waiver list..again...Amazing week, fellow BB fans..nothing much happened...why?

the problem is no one wants his contract. The red sox were still going to pay some of it if the deal went through sending him to the mets. The sox may try the irrevocable waivers thing again in october. Which would free up a lot of cash. But giving up a 150 rbi guy is tough.

Piazza has doubles power and could use the wall to have more. Why does he suck away from Shea, though? He should never play road games for the Mets.

Why $110.00? Just a quirk... I was spending money I made picking S.D. to win AFC West last year at 30-1....

I put $110.00 on it...if Astros go to W.S. I win $4400.00...

I know a guy that was in Vegas prior to the 2000 football season (very early), put down $100 for the Rams to win the SB. Collected about $13k.

hahaha...the Padres are bad...but not that bad...they are -220 to win N.L. west, they are 4-1 to win N.L. pennant (the Astros are now 10-1 to win pennant)

NL Central: Hey..lookee here..Cards lead the Astro's by 9.5. First time in a long time the lead is in single digits..What say you, SCALEMAN? Tony LaRussa must be a whole lot of fun this week. StL begins a series againt the Marlins tonight...could be big for both teams..

Cards are 10-5 (.666 and that includes the WC trip) since the All Star break with 4 starters out. I'll take that for the rest of the season. If the Cards went .500 for the rest of the season, the Stros would have to be at .672 to take the division. They have 5 games left between them with 3 @ Bush and 2 in Houston. Don't bet the lunch money on that.

Look for Walt to do something, he has a history of 'stealth' acquisitions in the last half.

Cards should be healthy in Sept. and we will see if the Stros can keep up in the WILD CARD race.

Imposing stats you cite..and that's why BB is such a great game..I think the Cards will win the division..but..here's another way to look at the argument..right now StL has a 9.5 game lead..if the 'Stros can win 4 of 5 games left..that cuts it to a 6.5 game lead..and that is not impossible with their rotation..then basically, Astros have to pick up one game a week on StL for the rest of the season..

If you define fundamentals as pitching, then yes, they are a good fundamental team. But all four positions in what was the best defensive infield in the American League are gone (Guzman and Koskie lost to free agency, Rivas to Class AAA and Mientkiewicz traded) and they are simply not the same defensively. The outfield defense is still very good if Hunter is healthy.

However, fundamental baseball also means doing little things like getting on base, and if you don't have any power hitters, above all it means moving runners. This Twins team is as bad as any I have ever seen at moving runners, and in the clutch you can pretty much forget everyone in the lineup except for Mauer and Shannon Stewart.

This team has lineup rot. It will take at least two big league hitters to cure what ails them.

ken -- I agree Yanks pitching ain't pretty, but in reality the team ERA is almost exactly the same as the Red Sox -- which is no work of art either. Three guys the Yanks got for nothing off the scrap heap -- Leiter, Chacon and Small -- all pitched very solidly, much better than some of the bigger names they replaced. And while the Unit was lousy yesterday, his start before that was his best of the season, 7 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs. Despite what it looked like earlier in the season, it may very well be once again that the Wild Card comes out of the East. Minny is struggling, and losing Hunter really hurts. Says here the 4 AL playoff teams will come from among these 5 -- NY, Boston, Chi, Oak, and the artist formerly known as Anaheim. The A's have that great pitching, but I'm not sure they can keep this pace up. I'm a bit surprised at the Angels travails -- at times they look like the best team in baseball, albeit one with little offense -- but they also have the capacity to unravel. They have 10 games left with Oakland and 6 with Boston, and that internecine warfare could help the Yanks slip in there. As a Yanks fan, I was really hoping that original Manny trade would have gone through, but I knew Theo would never be dumb enough to take Huff and Cameron for Manny. I agree that in the off-season he will rejoin his fellow headcase Pedro and live happily ever after in Queens. And my sympathies to TB and Fla fans, having to put up with front offices that hem and haw and won't pull the trigger. TB had a golden opportunity for nice prospects in the original Manny deal. And now Fla gets nothing for Burnett, unless they have some understanding about re-signing him.

I'm not an NL guy, but I have to say the Braves continue to amaze. Where they dig these arms up, only Leo Mazzone knows. And Houston stays dangerous with its own well-armed staff. I think one of those two can take out the Cards in the playoffs.

he hit 2 home runs in a recent series against the sox. I think we should protest and get a redo. Funny lately especially after hit # 3000 he was being called one of the most underrated players in history. He is going to get roasted for this. I cant wait for pardon the interruption tonight on ESPN

Yankees/RS end the season with a 3 game series..Imagine if it starts with Boston up by 2-3 games..ONE win..and they knock the Yankees out of the playoffs completely...That might make up for Dent's HR..
