Research and recall
7/31/05 | Self

Posted on 07/31/2005 6:02:59 PM PDT by lancer

I'm looking for an efficient way to record the names and biographical data of various persons and organizations and their links with each other. I have tried MSAccess, but it does not seem workable. There are several Freepers who do an excellent job of finding references to articles or names and posting it quite fast. I'd like to know how they store and recall that data so quickly.

TOPICS: Computers/Internet; Society
KEYWORDS: biographicaldata
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For the few things I store, I just use Word.

But if I were to store quite a bit, I would have to think about using something else...

Excel perhaps?

I suppose I could come up with a form in Excel that would work. Excel has enough storage, at least for a few thousand entries. I'll give it a try and see how it works.
Thanks, MikeinIraq

It's called Google and with four or five key words you can lay your hands on just about anything. Yeah, a good memory helps but really, if you can think of keywords to index an article in MS Access or a spreadsheet or whatever ... why bother when Google already indexes it for you? You can even use Google to search exclusively within FR.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have heard some things about Google that give me pause about using them for this. May be nothing to it, but for now I don't want to use them. Can't even remember now, but it had something to do with them collecting data on their users.

this may seem like a stretch....but a genealogy program may provide you with what you need...something like Family Tree Maker.

Memory helps alot, the funny thing is,when I "google",many times it leads back to an FR post.

Guys, I think I found the answer. It's called Sleuthhound. I'm attaching the readme file. You have to index your holdings, but once you have them indexed, this mother flies through them like lightning and picks out all the files that have the keyword(s).
